Joseph Parker wants Haye showdown at Wembley

11:35 AM Thursday Dec 22, 2016

Joseph Parker's team is already calling out David Haye, even though the Brit cannot be the Kiwi WBO champion's next opponent.

The search for a massive pay day has Parker's handlers dreaming of an outdoors clash against Haye at the legendary Wembley Stadium in London.

The late-April, IBF title fight between Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko will draw a crowd of up to 90,000 at the famous Wembley venue, providing gate receipts of around $14m in a fight that will be worth $75m.

Realists may regard Wembley as a step too large for a Haye-Parker fight, but Duco boss David Higgins talked the prospect up on Radio Sport.

Parker's initial WBO heavyweight title defence is pencilled in for early April with Hughie Fury, Jarrell Miller and David Price the known candidates in a very fluid situation for a fight which will be held in Britain, America or New Zealand.

Wembley Stadium - could a Joseph Parker fight be held at the massive London stadium?
Next stop Haye, the 36-year-old Brit who held a unified cruiserweight title and then the WBA heavyweight crown.

Haye made a comeback 11 months ago after a three-and-a-half year absence. He was initially given the first crack at the winner of the Parker-Andy Ruiz WBO title contest, which Parker won in slightly controversial circumstances in Auckland.

But Haye pulled out of contention, and will instead fight fellow Brit Tony Bellew, a cruiserweight, on March 4. Higgins claimed Haye was running scared of Parker.

"We think Joseph will beat Haye, and we think Haye thinks the same," he said.

"He did a runner, we think he was worried that Joseph would beat him. So he's gone and taken another fight. Now they have elevated him to number one, suggesting he should be the second defence (for Parker).

"It would be such a big global fight you could hold it at Wembley in the English summer. A fight against Haye would be a worldwide event with turnover of 10s of millions, a mega event. But Haye did a runner this time and me might do a runner again."

The fight is back on - Joseph Parker defence needs public money

9:53 AM Thursday Dec 22, 2016

The debate about whether the public should put money into big boxing is back on.

Joseph Parker's management is reviving the bid for rate and taxpayer support saying it will be vital to staging the WBO champion's first title defence in New Zealand.

Duco boss David Higgins told Radio Sport the priority was to stage Parker's maiden defence of his title in this country.

A number of opponents - the latest being Englishman David Price - and venues are being suggested by reporters and commentators around the world, but Higgins says a fight in New Zealand is Duco's strong preference.

Higgins revealed that Duco will apply to the Government for major events funding and make another approach to the Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development agency.

In a clear challenge to boxing naysayers and those in charge of the public purse strings, Higgins said big boxing events definitely met the criteria for support.

Controversy raged before Parker's successful title fight against Mexican-American Andy Ruiz jnr at Vector Arena, with the Auckland Council events agency backing out of a $500,000 commitment on the eve of the contest.

Ateed said it had run out of time to "accurately assess the potential of this event", with new Auckland mayor Phil Goff playing a prime role in that decision in what many saw as a political move.

Higgins said: "There's no rush...we're going to put in an application in to New Zealand Government's major events funding. They have certain criteria and we think our event stacks up very nicely.

"Yes we will look at Ateed again. A major international boxing event does fit the criteria, it's a bulls eye on criteria. It attracts a lot of visitors and global viewers.

"We will slowly work out what is best for Team Parker, talk to the Government and the cities, and see where it is at. We would need enough sponsorship from the Government, a city, corporations or a combination of."

Duco pulled its application for national events funding of the Ruiz fight after a study of public and media reaction. At the time, Higgins said: "We're aware our business does rely on public goodwill. We're selling tickets, we're selling pay-per-view television. We rely on the public and we rely on that goodwill. We do not take it for granted."

Parker's first defence has been pencilled in for early April, and could be held in Britain - the hotbed of heavyweight title interest - or America.

Lol @ the idea of Haye v parker selling out wembely

A couple of points.

#1 Haye v chisora didn't even sell out Upton park.

#2 David Hayes casual fan support is an all time low.

If they were lucky, they would sell out the MEN or O2 which would still be way more money than anything here, but that's the top end. Parker isn't well known in the uk, or highly regarded after the close fight with ruiz.

As for Duco going cap in hand to the government again. Here's a question, why don't they put Parkers next fight on at Mt smart and go for a 45,000 gate?

Forget these manakau events center fights with half the space taken up by corporate comps eating cheap meals.

Make it a huge event!

I think JP struggles to pull in a decent crowd for his fights. Really can't see him filling a stadium.
TV3 said Price has been added to the list along with Miller and Hughie. Duco expected to announce the fight end of January. I like going for Forsyth-Barr in Dunedin. More capacity than Manakau and less than Mt Smart. Good test case, and don't have to worry about the weather.

If those are the three names Duco are mentioning, it'll be price.

Let's hope he can land a good shot early in the fight to make it interesting. If Parker blows him out without taking anything back it'll be a waste of a fight.
I think it all depends where Price's head is at and if he has his confidence back we all know he hits extremely hard but he has to be throwing with confidence and bad intentions and I just don't think his recent European cab driver opponents have helped him at all. As infern0 said if price can land something early it will make it interesting but my head says Parker by way of Brutal KO
If price lands some decent shots and Joe cones through it then I like his chances a lot more against AJ. If price lands and parker is badly hurt, it's the other way. If price freezes and gets blasted we learn nothing.

Price will be by FAR the hardest puncher Joe has faced it just depends as you say on mentality if he will be able to provide a test.
