Lucas 'Big Daddy' Browne believes he should be given a shot at the WBA interim heavyweight title or even regular champion Ruslan Chagaev in the wake of the Luis Ortiz doping scandal.

Ortiz won the interim strap with a one round KO of Lateef Kayode in September, but the result has now been made a no contest and the belt is likely to be declared vacant after the Cuban tested positive for the banned substance Nandrolone.

The Nevada State Athletic Committee held a meeting on Monday and unanimously voted to ban Ortiz for eight months (backdated to September) and fine him $8,000.

Browne is ranked number five by the WBA, but with Bryant Jennings likely to face Wladimir Klitschko and Alexander Povetkin and Tyson Fury exploring options with other sanctioning bodies, the hard-hitting Aussie is the highest available contender.

"I'm so close to landing a huge fight, I can almost touch it," Browne, 22-0 (19 KOs), said. "I'm crossing my fingers that I'm going to land a title fight early this year and I'll make sure that I grab the opportunity with both hands, if it eventuates.

"Whether it's the interim title or Ruslan Chagaev, it doesn't matter to me. I like my chances with any heavyweight in the world and that includes Chagaev. I've got two legends of the sport in Ricky Hatton, my promoter and Jeff Fenech, my trainer, in my corner.

"I'm going from strength to strength. My fans base in Australia and also the UK and Ireland will be right behind me. I get constant messages of support from all over the world and I thank the fans for that.
"I try to make myself accessible to the fans and I think that's why I get such a strong following. Fighting for a world title with all that support would be a dream come true."

Matt Clark, Browne's co-manager, added: "We are hopeful that this opens up a huge opportunity for Lucas Browne to either challenge for the vacant interim title or face Ruslan Chagaev for his regular belt.

"Lucas is essentially the highest ranked contender available in the WBA rankings to face Chagaev or contest the interim title, as the other boxers appear to be taking different paths.

"Lucas has fought away from Australia on six occasions, which is a testament to his warrior mentality. If we have to travel again for the interim crown or to face Chagaev, he will have no problems at all in doing so."

Rising New Zealand heavyweight boxer Joseph Parker says his training date with world champion Wladimir Klitschko is motivating him to be at his best for his next fight.
The 22-year-old will attend Klitschko's April camp in Austria as a sparring partner – an opportunity he describes as "awesome".
But first he fights American journeyman Jason Pettaway in South Auckland on March 5, the start of a planned five-fight year his backers Duco hope will move Parker into the top five.
Unbeaten Parker certainly doesn't want to arrive at Klitschko's HQ suffering his first loss.
Parker heads to Las Vegas on Thursday, fresh off a decent break in Samoa following a year that took him to No 10 with the WBA and No 12 with the WBO. He's fired up to make the most of the opportunities that continue to fall his way.
"The Klitschko camp is definitely motivation for me," Parker said today in Auckland where he got to meet Pettaway who is on a quick media tour of the country.
"Just getting the welcome to the camp is a great opportunity. But I know if I can't beat Jason then I'll definitely have trouble with Klitschko big time.
"So I'm just trying my best to get past this challenge and then looking at going over and sparring Klitschko who is the best in the world. You can't get any better than that.
"Having that in the background is going to help push my training even harder. I'll be focused as soon as I get back to Vegas. I've got seven weeks to prepare. I'm really fired up to get back into my training now. I'm ready."
Parker said meeting Klitschko when he fought on the champion's undercard in Germany last April was a highlight, but getting in a ring with him and observing his routines would be invaluable.

"Just getting the respect from the champ asking you to come and be one of his sparring partners is awesome," Parker said.
"Watching how he operates and trains, that's going to be a whole different level for me. He has dominated for 10 years and in that time I've always looked up to him as 'the man'.
"It's going to be an exciting time … putting yourself against the champ and seeing where you are at in the sport."
The details of Parker's stay in Austria are limited at this stage, but a few rounds with Klitschko shape as an ideal barometer for an ambitious fighter.
Still, Parker believes there will be plenty to learn and overcome in this next fight against Pettaway.
The 34-year-old has a solid pro record of 17 wins and one loss after an extensive amateur background.
He's noted for his movement, producing a hit and run style that can frustrate opponents.
"From what I've seen of him, this a is a real good challenge," Parker says of Pettaway who certainly has size and looked to be in good shape today.
"He brings different challengers than my last opponents and I'm excited about that. I see him as a bit like Brazil's Marcelo Nascimento who I beat in Germany.  I had a bit of trouble cutting off the ring, I missed with a lot of shots I shouldn't have missed with.
"Jason is a very technical fighter, there are going to be a lot of different angles and movements."
Pettaway said fighting Parker in New Zealand looms as a real challenge. All of his wins have come in his native West Virginia with his one loss to Russian Magomed Adbusalamov happening at Madison Square Garden in New York.
"It's an honour to be here," the soft spoken American said.
"But I've come to win and take those belts back with me. It's a great opportunity for me, a great moment. I'm coming off a busy year … this is a good time for me."
He acknowledged Parker's speed and skills but detected weaknesses, particularly the Kiwi's habit of dropping his hands.
"I've looked at a lot of Joseph's fights and that's given me things to work on.
"I feel like I'll be able to distribute my punches in a way he won't be able to hit me."

Some would say that the Heavyweight division has been at its weakest since it was formed. Entering in the midst are two prospects shaking things up making their name. Both have had positive starts against journeyman now its time to bang with the big boys.

Both Parker and Joshua have impressed critics and exfighters even so the rivalry between the two have already begun between fans and trolls alike. If these two keep performing the way they are performing it is inevitable that the two will meet.

At one time, Shane was something like #7 in the world in one of the alphabets.  That was before he met Tua.  Even so, he really never beat anyone of note except for Barrett, who is an experienced, very good journeyman.  I saw Cameron as a top 50 fighter at one point.  Not bad, considering you are one of the best 50 people in your chosen profession. 

So my question is: was there more in him?  He topped out before the Tua bout, and never improved.  Could he have done better if he had another trainer than Lollo?  Or if he didn't switch so often.  Or if Cullen didn't sponsor him?  Or if he was managed differently by Reinsfeld?

What are your thoughts?  Was he the best he could be, or could he have been better?

Joseph Parker tipped as a real knockout by ESPN expert Dan Rafael

ON THE UP: Joseph Parker is getting praise from all the right circles.

Heavyweight boxer Joseph Parker has been named one of the sport's rising stars and tagged as "the total package".

The 22-year-old has got a real admirer in ESPN's Dan Rafael, widely acknowledged as one the world's best boxing writers.

Rafael has listed Parker among his 20 rising stars and "one to watch" as well as nominating Parker's last win over Brazilian Irineu Beato Costa Jr for the knockout of the year award.

Parker won all five fights in a busy year where he took his unbeaten record to 12 victories and moved to No 10 with the WBA and No 12 with the WBO.

"The heavyweight division is in desperate need of new blood and Parker is one of the guys seemingly ready to deliver it," Rafael wrote.

"Already a popular attraction in his country, Parker (who has had two fights in the United States) looks like the total package so far with good size (6-foot-4, 230 pounds), big power and a good team behind him, including noted trainer Kevin Barry.

"In 2014, Parker was 5-0 with 4 KOs, including wins against veterans Brian Minto (TKO7) and Sherman Williams (W10). His fourth-round destruction of Irineu Beato Costa Jnr on December 6 was as brutal a knockout as you'll ever see."

Barry said recognition from ESPN was "a great achievement after two years as a pro".

Parker was one of only two heavyweights on the ESPN list. The other was unbeaten British 25-year-old Anthony Joshua, who won the 2012 Olympic super heavyweight gold medal and has taken his professional career to 10 wins, all by knockout.

Joshua and Parker appear to be on a collision course.

Parker promoters Duco Events have another busy schedule planned for Parker in 2015, hoping for a world title shot within two years. Parker's next opponent will be named next week.

Wilder, Stiverne trade jabs on teleconference

For boxing fans, and in particular heavyweight boxing fans, January 17th is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated heavyweight fights since the Tyson era. Hard punching Haitian Bermane “B. Ware” Stiverne (24-1-1, 21 KOs) takes on the #1 ranked Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder (32-0, 32 KOs) in a fight that pits two devastating punchers in the ring for Stiverne’s WBC title. It has all the makings of a coming out party…with the winner likely to emerge as the most talked about North American fighter in the world. And it was clear after a telephone conference last week that both fighters were already throwing bombs.
“January 17 will be a short night,” WBC champion Bermane Stiverne said early in the press conference, “A short, painful night.”
Stiverne’s manager, Camille Estephan also seemed unimpressed with Wilder’s glossy record. “(He’s) 32-0, 32 knockouts…against who? !” Estephan said when discussing Wilder’s record. “We believe this is a choreographed career.”
However, the hard punching challenger was unimpressed. “The things I do, I make the mind play tricks on you!” Wilder said when asked why he didn’t seem to get the credit that his record would seemingly merit, “It’s unbelievable how it happened like that! But on January 17th we’ll find out. They are going off of one opponent. I have one opponent, Malik Scott, who would beat every single opponent he beat!”
Although most boxing insiders are predicting a slugfest, Stiverne refused to make any predictions. “Instead of telling you about it here, I will show you…Don’t blink!”
Wilder, who has yet to make it past the fourth round in any of his professional fights, dismissed questions about his endurance or ability to take the fight into the later rounds. “I’m not an amateur boxer,” Wilder added. “I know my skills and my ability. The hard work is done in the gym. Nothing has ever been given to me. I’ve had to work for everything I’ve ever gotten. I don’t know what the easy road is. There is nothing in the back of my mind about going past four rounds. We can go back to 15 if you want.”
Wilder also refused to make a firm prediction, although he made it abundantly clear that he remained confident going into the fight.
“The best man of the night will win,” Wilder added, “and I already know who is the best man. It’s my time to make history. I’m giving American their next heavyweight world champion. I’m on my way to becoming the heavyweight champion of the world, I’ve had to work hard for it and it’s my time…I have heard nothing but excuses for my 32 wins by KO and when I get 33, I don’t want to hear anything about it!”
The fight will be at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas Nevada, with tickets starting at $50 and going up to $500 for ringside.
