Joseph Parker set for heavyweight title shot against Daniel Dubois in Saudi Arabia
Liam Napier

Joseph Parker appears set to land his second heavyweight world title shot early next year.

Ten years on from capturing the WBO world title with victory over Andy Ruiz Jr in Auckland, Parker is expected to challenge Englishman Daniel Dubois for the IBF crown in Saudi Arabia on February 22.

Dubois (22-2) stunned Anthony Joshua by dropping his compatriot four times in a five-round demolition at Wembley in September to claim the vacant IBF title.

Joshua was initially expected to accept an immediate rematch with Dubois but has since stepped aside, paving the way for Parker to challenge for one of the four world titles not held by Ukrainian champion Oleksandr Usyk.

Earlier this month the Herald reported Parker was on course to land another title shot and respected boxing journalist Dan Rafael today suggested the Kiwi heavyweight and Dubois would headline the February card in Saudi that is also likely to feature Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol’s rematch for the undisputed light-heavyweight crown.

Rafael reports the stacked card could feature three world title fights, with IBF welterweight champion Jaron Ennis against Vergil Ortiz in the works.

Undefeated German Agit Kabayel and Chinese powerhouse Zhilei Zhang, who Parker conquered earlier this year, are also slated for the same event.

The Herald understands no deal has yet been signed between Parker and Dubois.

While Frank Warren, Dubois’ promoter, is likely to demand a rematch clause and have everything stacked in his fighter’s favour, this is the opportunity Parker has long sought after defeating former feared world champion Deontay Wilder and Zhang in his last outings.

Dubois possesses destructive power – and has defeated Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic and Joshua in his last three fights – but Parker will fancy his chances as the better technical boxer.

In the complicated boxing world, Parker may have to forgo his interim WBO champion status in order to be ranked by the IBF sanctioning body.

Parker has been on ice, training in the background with Irish coach Andy Lee and trainer George Lockhart while patiently waiting for his next opponent, since his majority decision win over Zhang in March.

Confirmation of Parker’s title challenge against the 27-year-old Dubois is not expected before Tyson Fury and Usyk’s rematch on December 22.

But it appears Parker’s Christmas will come early as he prepares for a second shot at a treasured world crown.

To beat DDD, you need to outwork him, have a great chin, and frustrate him with boxing skills. JP has all three. I watched his fight again against JJ and JJ had all these things, and caused DDD to quit due to his eye being shut.

I'm still not sure why DDD quit v usyk?was it frustration at being outboxed?
Joe needs to do what he has been doing- feints changing levels etc when Dd sets himself to fire. Make him over think and sxhsust himself while landing quick combos. Dubois has power and a hard jab....nullify those

Can't remember the DDD/Usyk fight too much, as it was more than a week ago that I saw it! I think that he was just getting outboxed and decided he'd had enough. He quit. Wasn't a punch or injury that did it. Mind you, Usyk does that to a lot of boxers. Thought AJ was gonna quit on him in their first fight.
Yeah, feints, changing angles and levels, quick fire combos, and a stiff jab will do the trick. I can't believe DDD struggled with JJ and Hrgovic, but easily demolished AJ. Gotta be that AJ has no chin.
BTW, what do you think about JJ being a sparring partner for JP. He's local, knows DDD, and his career is going downhill since his loss to Chisora.

Yes to sparing jj
Although jj will probably want to face jp again to rescue his career.
I really think jp dominates ddd although some of my mates disagree and think the power of DDD toomuch

I guess my point is why DDD struggled against Miller, Hrgovic, and Usyk but easily beat AJ. Who is the real DDD, the former guy who fought those previous guys or the DDD who fought AJ? Can't believe he suddenly became a powerhouse after one fight.

Maybe Don Charles has instilled belief that was missing in DD previously
Verus JJ and Usyk when things got tough he didn't think it was worth going through it
JP needs to make it tough - mentally and physically- time his attacks so DD can't get his jab going
Hope JP heads to Ireland after christmas and works on a game plan with Lee asap

As dedicated as JP has been, I think he'll have a good two months in camp. Fury can give him some advice after his Usyk fight. DDD has a good jab, but JJ was superior at times with his jabs. And JP has a good one. Seems to me it comes down to JP's speed and avoiding big shots, or taking them well.
