New Zealand Heavyweight Rankings Update – June 1, 2025

[Image: https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.ama...5x560.jpeg]

The New Zealand heavyweight boxing landscape has undergone significant shifts this month, with notable changes in the rankings due to inactivity and emerging talents making their mark.

Departures Due to Inactivity
Kiki Toa “King” Leutele and Amato Mataika have been removed from the national rankings after over a year of inactivity.

Kiki Toa Leutele (12-2-2, 8 KOs) last competed in March 2024, securing a victory over Arsene Fosso. Despite his record and previous activity, his absence from the ring for over a year has led to his removal from the rankings.

Amato Mataika (4-1, 4 KOs) has not fought since May 2024, when he faced Stevan Ivic. His prolonged inactivity has similarly resulted in his exit from the rankings.

New Entrants
Liam Talivaa and Nikolas “The Greek” Charalampous have entered the heavyweight rankings at positions #4 and #5, respectively, following notable performances and activity.

Liam Talivaa (7-1, 3 KOs) has made a significant impact by avenging his sole professional loss. In April 2025, he faced Brandon Grach in a highly anticipated rematch and secured a fifth-round TKO victory. This impressive win has propelled him into the #4 spot in the national rankings.

Nikolas “The Greek” Charalampous (23-6-2, 11 KOs) enters the rankings at #5. With a professional career spanning over a decade, Charalampous has enjoyed a late-career resurgence since resuming activity at heavyweight, posting a 2-0-2 record with 2 KOs since his return. His consistent presence and recent success in the division have earned him recognition among the country’s top heavyweights.

Nik "the Greek" is a heavyweight? I remember when Chris Martin picked him up as a street kid and made him a boxer. Hope he goes well at heavy.
Wonder who Hemi is fighting next after the Whyte fight fell through?

[Image: GutzZUAXcAAysm4?format=jpg&name=900x900]

Here are the latest shifts in New Zealand’s top 10 pound‑for‑pound fighters, reflecting recent performances and key movements:

Hemi Ahio climbs one spot to fifth, moving up from sixth.

Andrei Mikhailovich, previously ranked fifth, slips to sixth after a narrow split decision loss to Australia’s Blake Wells in early April.

Francis Waitai advances from 8th to 7th following a strong 10-round unanimous decision win over previously unbeaten Mikey Helg on 29 June at the BX‑9 Series.

Lilo Telepe drops one position to eighth to accommodate Waitai’s rise in the rankings.

Haven't heard of Masson, and figured I should if he's ranked 2nd, so I looked him up:

You should definitely check out his fight with Fabio Turchi; it was one of the best bouts of 2023. I thought he did enough to get the nod against Masternak too. He’s set to face John Parker at the end of the month and has said he hopes his team can line up a fight with Nyika next.
