Mailata was supposed to be the next big thing a few years back, and disappointed. Ahio used to be one of my favourite fighters, but he needs to step up in his next fight. RE: NZ Boxing Rankings - jamieson2 - 02-01-2025 You could make a case that Mailata & Mataika should both still be undefeated. Ahio struggled in the rematch with Opelu. They should do a trilogy. RE: NZ Boxing Rankings - diehard - 02-01-2025 I don't know. Leave it re:Opelu. Just the wrong fight for Ahio. He needs to fight the next level up, and come what may... RE: NZ Boxing Rankings - jamieson2 - 02-01-2025 There's nothing wrong competitive fights around your level. I'm glad he's got his weight back down. RE: NZ Boxing Rankings - diehard - 02-02-2025 Nothing wrong with it. Depends on your goals. If the goal is to stay at your level and earn money, good on him. If it's to fight at your level and then progress after this fight, maybe a good strategy. If your goal is to compete with the elite, time to step up, especially since he's getting up there in age. I honestly thought he had a chance to win a fight in the top ten, but given how he struggled with Opelu, a journeyman, I have my doubts. RE: NZ Boxing Rankings - jamieson2 - 02-04-2025 Who do you consider elite? And of those you consider elite, how many would view Ahio as a potential opponent? The risk-reward factor comes into play. Ahio has a decent name in Browne on his ledger, and if he can continue his current streak against competitive opposition, he may earn a bigger opportunity in the not-too-distant future. RE: NZ Boxing Rankings - diehard - 02-04-2025 I guess elite would be in the top 15 for Ahio. If he was in the top 15, I'd say top 10. If he were top 10, I'd say top 5. Depends on where he's ranked. How many would view Ahio as a potential opponent? No one, unless he gets on a Turki card. Fa was able to fight Sanchez, a top ten guy, and he and Ahio are on about the same level. I think I do remember Ahio being in the top 15 at one time. I think you chose Plan B for Ahio. Fight competitive opposition and hope to get an "elite" opponent. That's good, but Ahio is 34 years old! Times a ticking... RE: NZ Boxing Rankings - jamieson2 - 02-04-2025 Yeah, Plan B for me—keep the W's ticking over while waiting for an opportunity to present itself. The trouble is, like you say, he's 34, and some of that competitive opposition could potentially topple him. |
