RE: SBW vs Chauncey - diehard - 01-28-2015

Chauncy sees this fight as huge in his career, and said he was going to get in shape and whoop his ass. Teach him something. He also said he won't be in the shape he was in previously when he was fit, but he'll be in better shape than he was with Ustinov and Browne.

I just don't see Chauncy having the punch to hurt SBW, and SBW will fight at a distance. Although Chauncy does have a pretty good body shot in close. Me, I wouldn't bet on it unless I had some odds.

SBW is "better than Michael Jordan"

Sonny Bill Williams is a better athlete than Michael Jordan, according to the man he next faces in the boxing ring.

And that scares experienced American Chauncy Welliver.

"This guy is an all-round athlete - he can run, he can jump, he can do a little bit of everything," Welliver said on Wednesday's ahead of Saturday's heavyweight main event in Sydney.

"You're not going to find a better athlete, not in America, not in Australia.

"This guy is a better athlete than Michael Jordan.

"You look at me, I'm not the most athletic guy in the world, but the one thing I'm going to bring on Saturday night is heart and balls.

"I'm going to bring it, I'm going to make a fight of it, and we're going to see if Sonny Bill can actually fight."

The former New Zealand heavyweight champion has more than 10 times the number of fights under his belt, and labelled his Kiwi opponent "just like a kid in my sport".

But Welliver said that seeing Williams' last fight - a controversial 10-round victory over South African Francois Botha in February 2013 - had made him nervous.

"He looked amazing against a guy that was beating Mike Tyson, beating Evander Holyfield, and he dominated," the 31-year-old said.

"Obviously he got a little tired in the later rounds and I'm hoping that's the case Saturday night, but he dominated a good veteran.

"I hope I can show him some new things on Saturday night."

Williams admitted he was a "little bit too cocky" going into his fight with Botha, having underestimated how much preparation he needed to face the seasoned professional.

"I didn't do myself justice and respect the sport, hence the reason the last couple of rounds I was out on my feet," he said.

"But I'm really happy with the way the prep's gone this time, seven-eight weeks of tough, hard training, and I'm just really keen to get out there."

Saturday night's clash will be Williams' seventh professional bout before returns to Super Rugby with the Chiefs after two years playing in the NRL.

Welliver has had 70 fights with 55 wins and five draws.

"You've got to respect that - and I definitely do," Williams said.

I also saw the $39.99 and quickly decided I would not be watching. I thought it was going to be on sky sport.
Maybe I'm wrong but I couldn't see many nzers paying $40 other than hardcore Chiefs fans...

Sonny Bill Williams and Anthony Mundine slug it out ahead of Chauncy Welliver fight

FRIENDLY FOES: Anthony Mundine and Sonny Bill Williams went toe-to-toe in sparring at a Hamilton gym.

Sonny Bill Williams versus Anthony Mundine. It is a fight many sports fans would love to see but only a select few were on hand as the pair went toe-to-toe for nine rounds in a New Zealand gym.

Mundine, the former NRL-star-turned-world-champion-boxer who paved the way for Williams and a growing number of athletes to try their hand at other sports, was in Hamilton earlier this month to help his close friend prepare for Saturday night's bout with 70-fight veteran Chauncy Welliver at Allphones Arena when the dual-code superstar's sparring partner failed to turn up.

Despite conceding a major height, weight and reach advantage to the dual NRL premiership-winning forward and All Blacks star, Mundine agreed to fill the void and for the next 30 minutes they slugged it out. "We've both got too much manhood to hold back so I knew that even though he said he was going to take it easy he wouldn't," Mundine said.

"We started off doing three or four rounds and I was looking around wondering when he was going to stop because I hadn't done any sparring since my last fight [in November] but he wanted to keep going. We went to round five and then round six and he kept saying, 'Let's do another one'. We ended up doing nine rounds so the next day I was pretty sore and sorry but I am glad to have been able to give him the help he needed," Mundine said.

Asked who had won, Mundine said it would have been a draw as both landed significant blows on the other. "I got him with a left hook and he said, 'You've rocked me, you've rocked me'," Mundine said. "But I turned southpaw one time and he threw a right hand and I put my head down but it hit me in the top of the head as I came up and I was dazed so he got me too."

Williams said it had been a good experience to spar with the lighter and faster Mundine, who quit the Dragons in 2000 to focus on boxing. "He had just finished 20 minutes of training on a heavy [punching] bag but I was still in the ring with a world champ and Choc's speed is a lot quicker than any heavyweight," said Williams. "It was good to do some work with him and be able to learn from the best. He got me with a left hook once, it was a beauty and buckled my legs."

Williams won't have to worry about speed when he steps into the ring against Welliver on Saturday night but is wary of the experience of an opponent who has sparred with the likes of Wladimir Klitschko, Mike Tyson, David Tua, Shane Cameron, Juan Carlos Gomez and Shannon Briggs and boasts 55 wins and five draws in a career that has taken the American all over the world to fight. In contrast, the bout will be just the seventh in Williams' career and his first since beating Francois Botha two years ago in Brisbane.

"I have a lot of respect for Chauncey, anyone who has stepped into the ring 70 times you have to respect, and that is the reason I have trained so hard," said Williams, who was ringside when Welliver lost a points decision to Kyotaro Fujimoto in Japan in 2012. Welliver said his main concern was Williams' athleticism.

"This guy is a better athlete than Michael Jordan, he can run he can jump he can do a little bit of everything," he said. "If you look at me, I am not the most athletic guy in the world but the one thing I am going to bring on Saturday night is heart and balls, and we are going to see if Sonny Bill can actually fight."

I hope he's sparring some heavyweights......not sure what sparring with Mundine is going to do besides give him some cardio.

Sonny Bill Williams may have the physique but Chauncy Welliver has the know-how to win fight

CHRIS BARCLAY

VERBAL SPARRING: Sonny Bill Williams at a press conference to announce his bout with Chauncy Welliver.
.
As physical specimens Sonny Bill Williams wins by unanimous decision, but he is still burdened by the weight of expectation leading into his boxing comeback against jovial American journeyman Chauncy Welliver.

Williams will attempt to restore credibility to the heavyweight component of his sporting career tomorrow night in Sydney when his seventh professional bout - and first for almost two years - is the focal point of the inaugural Footy Show Fight Night.

The cross-code superstar is still smarting from his contentious win over South African Frans Botha in February 2013, and although he has added a second NRL premiership to his achievements since then, that night in Brisbane continues to undermine his pretensions as a boxer.

Williams acknowledged his win over Botha in a bout allegedly trimmed by two rounds when the veteran was gaining the upper hand had tainted his reputation, so his match-up with Welliver provides a belated opportunity to regain credibility.

"It's very important. It's taken a few years to get the fire back in the belly after the Botha fight," he said, after Welliver had a one way conversation during their stare down at Allphones Arena.

"I know I'll never be the best fighter in the world, I just want to keep improving."

Welliver, who took the stage while eating popcorn before weighing in at 136.6kg, dominated the pre-fight posturing as Williams stood in bemused silence.

"It's just how I am. Most Kiwis, that's how we're raised. We keep it humble but that doesn't mean I'm not confident in my ability and my two-month preparation," he explained following Welliver's expletive-laden rant.

Although he has lost his last three fights, the 31-year-old talked up his chances in between mouthfuls.

"Don't let this fool you guys," he said, in reference to his girth.

"I've come to f**k him up. Believe it or not, yes I did train. I've put in the miles. I did all the hard stuff, I've got the experience.

"I'm going to finish it easily. I'm going to pick up where Botha left off."

Welliver admitted he was wary after watching the Botha fiasco because Williams acquitted himself well before barely surviving 10 rounds of what many assumed was a 12-round contest.

"The more I watch that fight I say 'This kid can fight'. He looked amazing against a guy who was beating Mike Tyson before he obviously got tired.

"I give him a lot of respect, but he is just that, a kid - in my sport. He has six fights, I have 70.

"The question is can he go eight (rounds) with my style? One thing I do is I throw a lot of punches," he said, before declaring one certainty.

"You're going to see a lot of flab out there. People can say 'Oh my God, look at him, he's fat'. No shit, but I am in great cardio shape.

"I could stand there for 20 rounds right now," said Welliver, who was desperate to punch above his weight and add to his 55 victories.

"If we were in a beauty contest he wins, unfortunately for him it's a boxing match. This is where I get my chance to prove the fat guy isn't just some guy that sits on the couch all the time.

"This fight is big for me. It puts me right me back where I need to be to prove that I'm still legit."
