Tyson-Paul Undercard Results

By Jeff Zimmerman at ringside

In the opening bout at AT&T Stadium of the massive Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson battle live on Netflix, rising featherweight star Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington (15-0, 8 KOs) said he was going to steal the show versus Dana Coolwell (13-4, 8 KOs) and he sure tried to make his case early in the night. “Shu Shu”, a product of Brownsville, NY, like his idol “Iron Mike,” dropped Coolwell twice to score a dominant unanimous decision, 80-70 x 3.

Carrington put his full arsenal on display landing left hooks to the body, right hand uppercuts and everything in between. It was a left hook that dropped Coolwell in round four and the same shot that hurt him in round eight before “Shu Shu” put him down again with a flurry of shots in the corner. Coolwell was game and survived to the final bell but was no match for the ultra-skilled Carrington. The night could only get better for Carrington if “Iron Mike” beats Jake to win a 1 million dollar bet he made with Jake at weigh-ins on Thursday.

Undisputed female light Welterweight champion Katie Taylor (24-1, 6 KOs) did a bang-up job of beating Amanda Serrano (47-3-1, 31 KOs), winning a razor-thin 10-round unanimous decision. After a slow start, Taylor turned the tide by nullifying Serrano’s offense by using holding and repeated head clashes. Taylor cut Serrano badly with one of her bull-like head rams, forcing her to fight with just one good eye for most of the second half. In the eighth, the referee finally had seen enough and docked a point from Taylor for leading with her head in Billy Goat fashion. The judges’ scores were 95-94, 95-94 and 95-94. The head-butting was the difference in the fight.

Ramos v barrios fight very entertaining
Taylor v Serrano crazy - these 2 will fight again but damaging eachother badly... Katie needs to look at how much punishment she has been taking
Tyson v Paul a letdown - Tyson had no legs and a bung knee to top it off.
The Roy Jones Jr exhibition was better

The boos from a crowd wanting more action were growing again when Jake Paul dropped his gloves before the final bell, and bowed toward 58-year-old Mike Tyson.

Paying homage to one of the biggest names in boxing history didn't do much for the fans that filled the home of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys on Friday night (local time).

Paul won a unanimous decision over Tyson as the hits didn't match the hype in a fight between the 27-year-old YouTuber-turned-boxer and the former heavyweight champion in his first sanctioned pro fight in almost 20 years.

All the hate from the pre-fight buildup was gone, replaced by boos from bewildered fans hoping for more action in a fight that drew plenty of questions about its legitimacy long before it happened.

The fight wasn't close on the judge's cards, with one giving Paul an 80-72 edge and the other two calling it 79-73.

Tyson came after Paul immediately after the opening bell and landed a couple of quick punches but didn't try much else the rest of the way.

Even fewer rounds and shorter rounds, along with heavier gloves designed to lessen the power of punches, couldn't do much to generate action.

Paul was more aggressive after the quick burst from Tyson in the opening seconds, but the punching wasn't very efficient. There were quite a few wild swings and misses.

Tyson mostly sat back and waited for Paul to come to him, with a few exceptions. It was quite the contrast to the co-main event, another slugfest between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano in which Taylor kept her undisputed super lightweight championship with another disputed decision.

It was the first sanctioned fight since 2005 for Tyson, who fought Roy Jones in a much more entertaining exhibition in 2020. Paul started fighting a little more than four years ago.

The fight was originally scheduled for July 20 but had to be postponed when Tyson was treated for a stomach ulcer after falling ill on a flight.

Jake Paul decisions Mike Tyson

By Jeff Zimmerman at ringside

In an official heavyweight boxing match, Jake “El Gallo” Paul (11-1, 7 KOs) scored an eight round unanimous decision over 58-year-old ring legend “Iron” Mike Tyson (50-7, 44 KOs) on Friday night in front of 72,300-seat at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Scores were 80-72, 79-73, 79-73. The fight was fought with 14-ounce gloves and two-minute rounds.

Tyson came out strong in round one and landed the first blow of the night, a right hand to the head of Paul. Paul landed a shot later in the round as Tyson was warned of a low blow. Staying on the outside in round two, Paul scored with a body shot as Tyson landed a solid left hook. By round three, it was clear Tyson could not move well with a brace on his right leg as Paul continued to control the fight from the outside. In round four, Paul’s confidence grew as he let his hand go and hit Tyson with combinations. From rounds 5-8, it was mostly Paul picking his shots to the head and body whereas Tyson land an occasional left hook to Paul’s head.

Here’s a summary of post-fight quotes as each fighter was interviewed by Ariel Helwani in a back-and-forth exchange.

Jake: It was an honor to fight Mike and he’s the baddest man on the planet. I wouldn’t be here without him. He’s exactly what I thought – one of the greatest to ever do it. He’s a legend.

Mike: I didn’t prove anything to anybody, just to myself. He’s a very good fighter and deserves respect from other fighters.

Jake: I was trying to hurt him a little bit. I was scared he was going to hurt me.

Mike: I have a habit of biting my glove. I have a biting sensation.

Mike: Logan Paul might be next.

Jake: That was a good slap I like that.

Oscar Collazo looked spectacular scoring a 7th round stoppage over Thammanoon Niyomtrong to become the 1st Ring Magazine strawweight champion in history. An elite level performance.

Floyd Masson lost a questionable decision to Mateusz Masternak. I had Masson winning.
