Sheeraz fights Denny on the undercard tomorrow on the AJ/DDD undercard. We'll see how he goes down the track if Andrei wins.

New Zealand Boxing should try to put this fight together in the near future. @mikey_helg @franciswaitai #HelgWaitai

They're just starting out, and look pretty ordinary going by their records, so why would you want them to fight? Animosity? They could have been on the Andrei card in OZ in a week and a half or so. Or the fight that just happened with the Nyika undercard.

My bad, Helg is the NZ light heavyweight champ and is undefeated. Not sure about Waitai...

I’ll put your comment down to a lack of knowledge around the current national boxing scene.

Helg & Waitai are considered the 2 best light heavyweights in the country, that’s why I would want them to fight.

Professional boxing on a national level is abysmal & the commissioning bodies are barely active. They need to build some grass-roots rivalries, put out national rankings & titles with regular events for our professionals to compete against each other for. This fight would be a great start.

Yes, Helg is the current NZPCB Light Heavyweight Champion & Waitai should really only have one loss on his record. A UD loss to Mikhailovich 2 years ago at Super Middle. I thought he should have won the Jack Gipp & Jack Bowen fights, as well as his draw with Wuzhati Nuerlang for the vacant WBO Oriental Light Heavyweight Title.

True, I do have a lack of knowledge about most NZ fighters until they make it, or I see them in some undercards. I used to be much more knowledgeable when they would have NZ fighters on some channel in NZ about 5-10 years ago, but they discontinued it. Also used to go to a lot of NZ fights, but time and life got the better of me.
Thanks for educating me, and you're right. Just because they aren't marquee fighters doesn't make them less important.

I hear ya, I also used to be a much more hardcore fan a few years back but with boxing continuing to do itself no favours my interest has started to wane, too many fights on PPV that are undeserving, fighters fighting infrequently & not against the best opposition, bad scoring, PEDs & like you said a lack of local accessible coverage.

NZ boxing has always seemed to take a short term approach rather than building from the ground up with a big picture view. The interest is there it just needs to be done properly. The reason Australian boxing is in such a good position currently is because they focused on there national scene over the last couple of decades, building on local talents & rivalries & increasing interest in their national fighters.

Unfortunately, too often our NZ fighters have to go to OZ to make a name for themselves. It tickled me that Blake Caparello had to come here to fight Nyika. Of course, he whimped out.

When I lived in Opunake, we used to have a lot of NZ fighters, with the main event James Langton (who fought Betham) fighting each other. Tua even came down with one of his fighters. Of course, James beat him, causing Tua much upset.
