Kovalev stopped Yarde in the 11th round but not before a few anxious moments. He controlled the first half of the fight with his jab but Yarde came on strong in the 7th and 8th rounds when he had Kovalev out on his feet and ready to go. Kovalev was saved by the bell at the end of the 8th but came back to have Yarde in serious trouble in the 9th and 10th and the fight was over when Yarde walked into a straight left hand in the 11th.

Yarde looks to me like a fighter with a lot of very good natural ability but very lacking in the tactical department.

Yes I agree, for someone with so few fights under his belt (18 pro and only 12 amateur) he surprised me with his ability and how close he came to getting Kovalev out of there. Definitely seems like some pretty questionable tactics from his camp in both the lead up (apparently he doesn't do sparring sessions) and also in the fight itself. It almost seemed as if he was waiting for Kovalev to gas out in the later rounds before throwing much back, despite the fact he had never been taken past 8 rounds previously himself.

That'll be due to his lack of experience both as an amateur and pro. He did ery well I thought.
