Joseph Parker's big claim: I'm punching a lot harder now
Duncan Johnstone

Joseph Parker feels he may have finally found the power that has been missing in his game.

The 29-year-old believes he is punching a lot harder as he prepares to take on Dereck Chisora in Britain this weekend (Sunday morning, NZT).

Parker, desperately needing a statement performance as he looks for a new promotional contract and route back to the heavyweight titles, senses some quick gains under his new coach Andy Lee.

The pair have been working on improving Parker’s punching technique and Parker claims there are promising signs.

“When you are punching a certain way, and then you add better technique to how you are punching ... I feel like I’m punching a lot harder now. There’s only one way to find out,” Parker said as he fronted the international media on a conference call on Wednesday.

Parker’s power factor has been questioned as he has stepped up in opposition, with many critics feeling he didn’t have the punch to damage the top fighters.

Joseph Parker feels new trainer Andy Lee has improved his punching techniques.
Parker would love nothing more than to prove his new theory against Chisora, a come forward fighter who could walk into trouble.

“If I throw correctly, how I know I can, it would be nice to catch him clean and knock him out,” the Kiwi said.

Parker, looking trim and confident, feels energised by his new environment.

“I feel a lot different compared to the last four or five fights. My body at the moment ... I feel a lot fresher, I feel a lot better mentally and physically, I’m in better shape.

“There have only been positives since I’ve made the change.”

Lee, who came to Parker on the recommendation of Tyson Fury, confirms to impress his new pupil.

“Andy Lee is not only and trainer, but he is a teacher. There is a difference between people that train and teach. People can hold the pads and run through combinations but not many people can teach you about boxing. So there is a big difference. When Tyson asked me ‘what do you think of my recommendations – I said ‘I love it’.”

Parker and Lee have transferred from nearby Morecambe to the fight city Manchester, where Parker defended his WBO title against Hughie Fury in 2017.

Joseph Parker and trainer Andy Lee arrive in Manchester for his fight against Dereck Chisora.
He’s hoping the north of England can be the scene for his second coming after a couple of years where he has struggled for momentum.

Parker is ranked inside the top 10 with three of the four major organisations while Chisora’s best ranking is at No 15 with the WBC. Parker concedes he is expected to beat the 37-year-old Chisora, a vastly experienced fighter, and seems comfortable with the pressure that comes with those expectations.

“I’ve got youth on my side, I’ve got speed, I’ve got movement, so I should go in there and take care of business.

“I know Chisora is going to come ready because he knows it could be one of those big last fights for him if he gets it wrong.

“At this stage, I should be able to take care of business. I back myself and if I do lose, I’m not saying I will lose, but I will have to ask some serious questions of myself.”

Parker believes an exciting future awaits this next stage of his career if he can get past Chisora.

“A win over Dereck will open many doors. I feel there is a lot of opportunity to fight the other big names out there … there’s Andy Ruiz, there’s Dillian Whyte, there’s a lot of fights sitting there that we can make happen. I just have to get the job done.

“If I get the job done, I will fight anyone, I don’t care who it is, anyone who is free and willing.”

Chisora: I put the fear of God in Joe

Derek Chisora believes he puts “the fear in god” in Joseph Parker and says he expects the former WBO Heavyweight world champion to run when they clash over 12 rounds at the AO Arena, Manchester this Saturday May 1, live on Sky Sports Box Office in the UK and on DAZN in all markets excluding the UK, Ireland, China, New Zealand and Samoa.

Former world title challenger Chisora (32-10, 23 KOs) was last seen pushing Ukraine’s pound-for-pound star Oleksandr Usyk all of the way in their 12-round battle for the WBO Intercontinental Heavyweight Title at The SSE Arena, Wembley last October, and the fan favorite is chomping at the bit for his next challenge.

A meeting between the pair scheduled for October 2019 fell through at three-and-a-half weeks’ notice when Parker’s team revealed he was suffering from the aftereffects of a spider bite. Chisora, who was unconvinced with Team Parker’s reasons for pulling out in 2019, has labelled Parker a ‘chicken’ during the fight build-up and says he has unfinished business with the Heavyweight contender.

“I think he pulled out because he had problems for himself in America, and in New Zealand and Australia, so that’s why he pulled out,” said Chisora. “I don’t blame him. Things happen, people pull out of fights. But you have to have a good excuse. Him saying he had a spider bite was shambles of an excuse to be honest with you. But it happens, what can I say? I’m going to punch him up. I’m expecting Joseph to run away. That is 100%. I know for a fact he’s going to run away.

“Great for him he’s looking to become a World Champion, but it doesn’t mean nothing to me. I’m just going to pound on him when I see him. What can I do better than Joseph Parker? That’s a good question. Everything. The fight is going to be a great fight, we’re going to push on it, train hard and go crazy about it. You know the routine man – WAR. Expect what I always deliver. Beat the guy and pound on the guy. Destroy that guy. Confidence. I put the fear of god him in. I am bringing pain and war.

“Time is the most important thing, you know, and I don’t have much time in boxing, so anytime I go I’ll just take any fights I want to have because time is running out. Most people don’t want to fight me because I’m a headache. I bring it. I love fighting. I want the people at home to pay their money to watch me do what I need to do. I’m taking this fight because I want to win it.

“The way I look at it in boxing is, if you can bring numbers to the gate, bums on seats, you’re in a great position. If you don’t, you’re not. So when people say you’re in great position for fighting for Titles and stuff like that, I don’t believe so. I just look at it like, I’ve got a fight here and this is how many people are going to be watching my fight and I’m excited about that. You know, being mandatory and in eliminators, it’s a headache bro. I’m happy, I’m happy to fight. I’m happy to bring entertainment to people’s houses through television and stuff like that so I’m just excited and ready to go.”

Predictions???
I think sim to Usyk fight but the heavier JP punches take there toll and a swollen eyed Delboy is pulled by his corner after round 10.
Chisora will have some success but never really troubling JP .
YOUR TURN

I'm probably being uncharitable, but I expect a boring points decision to Joe. I think Joe will have a go for 3 or 4 rounds, then revert to form
