Tank Davis’ next opponent named

And it’s not Ryan “Kingry” Garcia…yet, at least.

WBA “regular” lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (27-0, 25 KOs) returns to his native DMV area to face undefeated WBA super featherweight champion and upset artist Héctor Luis García (16-0, 10 KOs) on Saturday, January 7 at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., headlining a Showtime PPV in an event. Pre-sale tickets will be available Tuesday through Ticketmaster with the code: BOXING

Garcia is coming off consecutive upsets over Chris Colbert in February and Roger Gutierrez in August. Against Davis, he will be a decided underdog again.

Munguia crushes Coria, calls out GGG

Unbeaten WBO #1, WBC #2, WBA #3, IBF #3 middleweight Jaime Munguia (41-0, 33 KOs) scored a one-sided third round KO against little-known Gonzalo “El Mago” Coria (21-6, 8 KOs) on Saturday night at the Arena Astros in historic Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. 100:1 favorite Munguia dropped southpaw Coria with a straight right in round two, then sent Coria to a knee with a body shot in round three. Coria watched the referee count him out. Time was 2:32.

After the fight, Munguia called out WBA/IBF middleweight champion Gennadiy Golovkin. “This year we couldn’t do Charlo,” said Munguia. “Hopefully we can do it next year. I know GGG has no compromise. He’s signed with nobody and I would love to meet him in May. Golovkin! See you in May!”

WBC #13, WBO #14 super flyweight Argi Cortes (24-3-2, 10 KOs) survived two knockdowns, but managed to escape with a ten round split decision against Erick “Habanerito” Lopez (16-7-2, 10 KOs). Cortes, who gave Juan Francisco Estrada a close fight back in September, had all kinds of trouble with the 5’2 Lopez. Lopez was credited with knockdowns in rounds two and six, but had a point deducted for a rabbit punch in round seven. Scores were 95-92, 95-92 Cortes and 96-91 Lopez.

Unbeaten super lightweight KO artist Diego “Azabache” Torres (16-0, 15 KOs) overpowered and knocked out Hector “La Cobra” Morales (6-2-1, 1 KO) in round four. Morales down twice in round four. Time was :19.

Super featherweights Benito “Canelito” Sanchez (15-6-3, 3 KOs) and Jose Angel Garcia (7-0-3, 6 KOs) battled to a ten round draw. Scores were 95-95 3x.

Opetaia aims to make Aussie boxing HUGE

By Ray Wheatley – World of Boxing

IBF cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia is looking forward to defending the IBF title in 2023 and possible unification bouts with WBA champion Arsen Goulamirian, WBC champion Ilunga Makabu, and WBO champion Lawrence Okolie.

“I’m at the table with the world champs now, I’m not playing in the backyard anymore,” Opetaia told Wide World of Sports. “I’m on the world stage. I’m a world champion. There’s like seven billion people in the world, I’m the #1 cruiserweight in the f**king world, bro.

“How many people get to say that? And that was just the start, that was my first world title fight. I’ve fought the best and I’ve beat the best, and now I want more, I’m not done.

“They’ve thrown a few names around, mandatories, and going over to England – but I don’t give a f**k who I fight next. All I want is to get paid what I deserve, and I’ll fight anyone.

“Everyone wants to fight for a world title, everyone is calling me out. They mean nothing. World champions are born in the gym, they’re born out of years of dedication.

“They are not just that, ‘Oh I’m going to call him out.’ That’s that showbiz shit. They’re getting mixed up with the fight game and show business because you’ve got YouTubers and shit fighting. Your mouth doesn’t get you fights, hard work does.”

“We’re in a position to conquer this whole f**king thing, like we can turn Australian boxing into something huge.”

Charlo-Tszyu lands at Mandalay Bay

Undisputed super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs) will defend his four titles against unbeaten WBO #1 contender Tim Tszyu (21-0, 15 KOs) live on SHOWTIME on Saturday, January 28 from Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

Jermell Charlo: “I’m excited to be back in the ring to defend my undisputed crown. I’m thankful for everything I’ve accomplished, but the battle isn’t over. Tim Tszyu is a young, hungry, aggressive fighter but I’m a pound-for-pound great. I reign as the undisputed champion and if anyone wants a shot at the crown, they gotta see me. I’m not going anywhere. I want all my fans to tune in because once again, it’s Lions Only time and I plan to light up Las Vegas and show the world that I’m the most dangerous fighter in the sport, regardless of division.”

Tim Tszyu: “Jermell is a great, smart fighter and has been for many years – becoming undisputed is an incredible achievement. But his time is over now, because I’m about to shock the world and take over. It’s going to be a great fight as neither of us know how to take a backward step and are going to be swinging from the start with very bad intentions. I’m preparing for a bloody war as I know he is too. I’ve already been grinding for months and I’m in the best shape of my career. The groundwork was laid in Australia and Thailand but I’m here now in the U.S. to take it to the next level, which is exactly what’s needed when you’re fighting for the undisputed championship of the world.”

Pre-sale tickets will be available Monday through AXS.com with the code: BOXING
