New Zealand heavyweight boxer Junior Fa gets main event status for US promotion
DUNCAN JOHNSTONE

New Zealand heavyweight boxer Junior Fa has been handed a big opportunity in the United States.
Rising New Zealand boxer Junior Fa opens his 2019 campaign with main event status on a heavyweight card in the United States this weekend.

The unbeaten Aucklander (16-0, 9 KOs) will fight former French champion Newfel Ouatah (16-2, 9 KOs) in Columbus, Ohio on Sunday (NZT).

Fa is ranked No 9 with the WBO on the back of his last win, an easy knockout of Argentina's Rogelio Omar Rossi on the undercard of Joseph Parker's Christchurch fight last December.

The 2m Ouatah will represent more of a challenge for Fa in what needs to be a moving year for the 29-year-old who is handled by the management of WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder.

It will be the fourth fight in the United States for the ambitious Fa in a promotion that is run as part of a sports festival organised by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Fellow Auckland heavyweight Hemi Ahio has been handed a great opportunity to advance his unbeaten career (12-0, 8 KOs) by making his American debut on the undercard.

Ahio takes on 30-year-old American Ed Fountain who has 12 wins and four losses.

Meanwhile, top New Zealand heavyweight Joseph Parker, the former WBO champion, has made some moves on the rankings after his last win against Mexian-American Alexander Flores.

Parker is at No 6 with the WBC and is back in the mix with the IBF, returning at No 13 after his status took a beating on the back of consecutive losses to British rivals Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte last year.

Parker is still looking for an opponent for his opening fight of the year after negotiations with rugged Brit Dereck Chisora fell over.

Parker has been talked of as an option for Tyson Fury after the giant Brit's hope-for rematch with Wilder was put on hold.
Fa ready to face French champ

WBO #8 heavyweight Junior Fa (16-0, 9 KOs), of Otahuhu, New Zealand, has returned to the United States for a 10-round clash against former French heavyweight champion Newfel Ouatah (16-2, 9 KO’s) this Saturday at the Voinovich Center in Columbus, OH. The event will be streamed on LIVE.DBE1.com.

“I follow the rest of the heavyweight division carefully and it seems as if there’s three big names; Wilder, Joshua and Fury, and then the rest. I’m not sure how much they will be fighting each other, but I like the idea of facing any of the three at the appropriate time,” said Fa.
That's the problem with the heavyweight division, it seems you just have to stay unbeaten to get a title shot. Even if you fight a 'former french champion' not even ranked in the top 100 in your 17th fight. It really is a pussy division compared to other weight classes, I mean not only do the top three guys not seem to want to fight each other (I know Fury and Wilder have fought, but it was a manufactured result) but the undisputed number 1 contender prices himself out of a title shot, NZ's number one doesn't seem to want to train inbetween fights. It's a division full of pre Madonna's. It used to be the thing to be heavyweight champion of the world, now you can get wealthy without even having to fight for the title.

Yeah, but you've got a lot of fringe contenders, like Ortiz, Breazeale, Parker, Whyte, Rivas, and then you have the up and comers like Dubois, Joyce, Fa.  Add in Schwartz  and Hammer, who are fighting this weekend, and you have a good division.  I think it's a solid division, but yeah, they all need to be fighting one another.
...and you throw in Big Baby Miller, Povetkin, and Chisora and you've got yourself a solid division.
Well said.
The HW division is alive and well in my opinion.
Hope our boys go well tomorrow..
