WBC Rankings Meeting LIVE Notes

By Karl Freitag

Due to lack of activity, this meeting might not be as lively as usual.

Heavyweight: Advocates of #6 Joseph Parker, #7 Daniel Dubois, #8 Filip Hrgovic asked that their fighters be elevated in the rankings. It was agreed that the winner of Dubois vs. Joe Joyce will be considered for a top five position.

Cruiserweight: No changes.

Light Heavyweight: Unified champion Artur Beterbiev will defend against IBF mandatory Meng Fanlong on September 25 in Russia. No further discussion.

Super Middleweight: Top Rank asked that Edgar Berlanga (14-0, 14 KOs) be ranked in the top 15. The Rankings Committee will consider. It was asked by Tom Loeffler through a proxy that Ali Akhmedov be moved from #14 to #12. The WBC agreed to move him to #13. Lionell Thompson will be dropped from the top 15 for not enrolling in the Clean Boxing Program. Roamer Angulo moves to #14 and Aidos Yerbossynuly will go to #15.

Middleweight: Golden Boy requested that #14 Jason Quigley get a top 10 ranking and that Chris Pearson get a top 15 ranking. The WBC will wait until there is some activity before considering those moves.

Super Welterweight: Tom Loeffler managed to connect and asked that #15 Serheii Bohachuk and #14 Takeshi Inoue be flipped. It was decided that Bohachuk will move to #13, Inoue will stay at #14 and #13 Abass Baraou will drop back to #15. Baraou’s people complained and convinced the WBC to keep Baraou at #13. In the end, it was decided that Bohachuk and Takeshi will switch spots.

Welterweight: Some talk about lower-rated fighters, nothing involving top 15.

Super Lightweight: Golden Boy requested that #4 Pablo Cesar Cano be moved up and Luis “El Matador” Hernandez into the top 15. Hernandez will fight next in the U.S. and this request will be re-evaluated then. Cano will stay at #4.

Lightweight: There was a request to flip #6 Zaur Abdullaev and #7 Richard Commey. That was accepted. There was a request to move Devis Boschiero into the top 15. A passionate discussion ensued about ranking Boschiero for the good of boxing and what it means to Italy. WBC Ratings Committee Chairman Dean Lohuis argued vehemently that Boschiero didn’t deserve it based on recent fights. It was decided Boschiero will get a #16 ranking.

Super Featherweight: Top Rank requested that Shakur Stevenson be placed at #2 and Abraham Nova be placed in the top 15. The WBC agreed to Stevenson at #2 and Nova will be reviewed.

Featherweight: No changes.

Super Bantamweight: No changes.

Bantamweight: #2 super flyweight Charlie Edwards is moving to bantamweight and will be placed at #3.

Super Flyweight: There was a request to rank unrated former WBA champ Kal Yafei in the top 5, a request for WBC #13 flyweight Sunny Edwards to be rated in the top 7, and a request to move Jade Bornea to the top 15. Lohuis recommended Yafei at #8 and Edwards at #15. Bornea was not added due to the top 15 due to the two fighters who were added to the division.

Flyweight: There was a request to move #6 Jay Harris up, and a request to move #14 Thananchai Charunphak up to top ten. Harris was switched with #5 Angel Acosta. Charunphak was put at #11.

Light Flyweight: No changes.

Minimumweight: The name of the division will be changed back to “strawweight.”

WBC: Canelo opponent named

The WBC has announced that Canelo Alvarez will face Avni Yildirim for the vacant WBC super middleweight championship. The WBC Board of Governors has voted 36-1 to order Alvarez, the multi-division world champion who holds The WBC “franchise” designation, to fight against the WBC’s mandatory contender of the division Yildirim. Yildirim (21-2, 12 KOs) is coming off a controversial technical split decision loss to Anthony Dirrell 18 months ago.

Looking forward to Eleider Alvarez-Joe Smith this afternoon. Doesn't look like Sky showing it but hope to catch the replay on YouTube. Could go either way but am leaning towards Alvarez as the more well rounded fighter.
