Ortiz KOs Thompson in six; Vargas KOs Ali for WBO welterweight title; Escandon takes WBC interim title
By Gary “Digital” Williams at Ringside

WBA Interim Heavyweight Champion Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz (25-0, 22 KOs) scored a sixth round KO over local hero Tony “The Tiger” Thompson (40-7, 27 KOs) in a non-title clash on Saturday night at the DC Armory in Washington, D.C. Ortiz dropped Thompson in rounds one and three, then put him down for the count in round six. Time was 2:29.

Welterweight Jessie Vargas (27-1, 10 KOs) scored an impressive ninth round TKO over previously unbreaten Sadam Ali (22-1, 13 KOs) to win the vacant WBO welterweight world championship. Vargas broke open an entertaining and close fight with an overhand right that dropped Ali at the end of round eight. Ali was still reeling in round nine and Vargas battered him to the deck again. The bout was finally waved off during Vargas follow-up barrage. Time was 2:09.

Ortiz is a great fighter. TT is waybover the hill now. Looked like a sparing match.
