The First World Heavyweight Title Fight in New Zealand
#1
The first "Official" NZ World Heavyweight title fight being the WBF World Boxing Federation was actually in 1993 at the Mount Smart Super Top. This bout was fought between our own Jimmy Thunder and England's Johnny Nelson. Thunder was the holder at the time previously beating Melton Bowen in Australia. You could easily argue that it may not have been a genuine world title fight HOWEVER the holders off this belt have included such names as Pinklon Thomas; Joe Bugner; Evander Holyfield; the most fabulous South African boxer Frans Boxer. Ironically the last holder was one Carlos Takam in 2013.

1988 was a busy year for boxing.

The WBF, the IBF and the IBO were all formed that year.

The WBC was formed in 1963 and the WBA formed in 1962.

Wasn't that the title Tupou was going for in Australia recently? Against Peter Graham?

Was that Prime Frans Botha or just ordinary Frans Botha. There's quite the difference you know...

They'd knock each other out. Hopefully.
