Garcia-Vargas final press conference

The fighters for Saturday’s big DAZN fight card in Dallas addressed the media in a press conference to discuss their preparation and predictions before entering the ring at Ford Center at The Star.

Mikey Garcia: I’m here to do one thing and I’m here to take over, show everybody that there’s a lot more to Mikey Garcia. I keep reminding people that I’ll be able to display all my skills on Saturday night and prove to everybody that I can be a serious contender at welterweight.
Jessie Vargas: I know Mikey is a good fighter. I have respect for him but the minute the bell rings it’s fight time. I plan to give you a fantastic performance to a point where you’ll be surprised and acknowledge that I am the one of the best in the division and I am en route to becoming the best.

Chocolatito Gonzalez: I am in the best condition for this fight. I have taken advantage of this opportunity. I come with God’s blessing that I will win Saturday night.

Khalid Yafei: I don’t know how I’m going to top Roman’s speech because he’s just someone I’ve looked up to for a very long time. It’s a bit hard for me because I’m fighting him Saturday night and I’m going to have to do what I’ve gotta do.

Jay Harris: I’m here to win and I think I’m going to pull off a massive upset on Saturday.

Julio Cesar Martinez: We’re just here to win.

Joseph Parker: I put in a lot of hard work in camp, I’ve sparred a lot of rounds, running, strength work, recovery, and I come ready for this fight. I’m not taking this fight lightly.

Shawndell Winters: I’m coming to fight, I’m coming to win, I believe this is my opportunity.

Joseph Parker is a huge challenge but Shawndell Winters won't freeze
Duncan Johnstone

Growing up on the tough streets of Chicago prepared Winters for boxing.
Shawndell Winters' tough life has never presented a bigger opportunity than fighting Joseph Parker and he intends to make the absolute most of it.

The confident 39-year-old flew from a snow-bound Chicago to Texas to face former WBO heavyweight champion Parker in Frisco this weekend (2pm Sunday NZT).

His wife was with him and his two daughters were buzzing at being on a plane for the first time. Their five sons will join them to watch a fight that could be life-changing.

Joseph Parker and his opponent Shawndell Winters with British promoter Eddie Hearn in Texas.
It's his biggest stage and a huge step up in class but Winters promises he won't freeze. By the sounds of things, he's had tougher challenges.

"He's a good fighter, he's pretty durable, he's been tested, he's fought at the world class level for a bit, so that says a lot about him," the humble Winters said of Parker.

"But we have got to see who he is, in front of myself. Fighting is relative to life to me. I've fought tougher opponents in everyday life.

"Where I was born and raised, it's a tough place in the city."

Winters admits he ran with the wrong crowd on the gritty streets of Chicago for too long: "You find a lot of things if you're not focused and at the time I wasn't focused."

A concerned family member took him aside and persuaded him to take up boxing.

He was 29 and showed instant talent, good enough to go to the state Golden Gloves every year and made the United States twice, taking silver in 2014. The following year he turned professional at the age of 34.

He got on an eight-win tear and now has a 13-2 record, his most recent fights coming as he stepped up to heavyweight where he bowled over a couple of decent Polish prospects.

He has been fighting at around 95kg. Parker is likely to come in at 111kg but Winters shrugs off the difference.

Winters explained the transition to the heavyweight division was easy because his amateur training for 50 fights was always based around sparring much taller and heavier fighters. But, again, he's goes back to his life lessons to emphasise that.

"Coming up in Chicago, I was always the smallest guy that ran with the guys that I was with. But I never got bullied, I never took the short end of the stick and that says a lot about myself as well."

Joseph Parker will take a height advantage into his fight against American Shawndell Winters.
He played football as a child and took his basketball skills to college level but it's boxing where he's found his place, loving the solitude of the situation.

"Boxing is like the ultimate competitive sport. I used to get mad playing basketball because you'd get mad if another player didn't want it as much as you. When I got into boxing it was like perfect ... nobody else to blame, it's all you."

He's got a big heart and, apparently, a big punch with 12 victories coming via knockout. He also loves a challenge and the underdog tag.

"I do draw from the things I've experienced," he says of his boxing life. "Going into other territories, other people's back yards and taking a win out of the jaws of defeat. That's what I pride myself on. I work extremely hard.

The New Zealand heavyweight and trainer Kevin Barry taper preparations for Sunday's fight with Shawndell Winters.
"Nobody ever gave me anything, that's why I'm appreciative of this opportunity.

"I plan on making it cool for guys to take fights that they ain't supposed to win. Back in the early days of boxing the fight game was just about the best fighting the best. It wasn't about being protective, cherry-picking, none of that ... you just got in there and put your best against the other guy's best.

"In this sport if history has taught us anything it's that anybody can hit, anybody can get hurt and anybody can lose."

Duncan Johnstone flew to Texas with the help of Duco Boxing. Parker v Winters, 2pm Sunday, Sky Arena.

nterview: Joseph Parker

By Jeff Zimmerman

Fightnews.com® caught up with former WBO heavyweight champ Joseph Parker in an exclusive interview during media day Wednesday, as he is fighting on the stacked card headlined by a clash between Mikey Garcia and Jessie Vargas for the WBC Diamond welterweight title at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas and shown live on DAZN. The event is promoted by Eddie Hearn and his Matchroom Boxing.

What did you think of the Fury-Wilder fight?

I thought it was a great fight for Fury. I thought he came out and executed the plan he put in place before the fight. He said he was going to go forward, he said he was going to put a lot of pressure on Wilder, throw a lot of punches and that’s what he did. I think he set a good pace at the beginning of the fight. And I don’t think Deontay had Deontay’s fight as we all saw.

Were you surprised Fury pressed the action the whole time?

I was very surprised. I didn’t expect him to plant his front foot and chase him down. It just shows the confidence he had in himself and it was obvious he was practicing that in camp, and he was able to execute it and do it.

Did it seem Wilder was missing a plan B and didn’t have his legs from the beginning?

From Wilder, he’s quite a straight up person and if the uniform affected him, it probably did affect him. If you have something like that, that you’re carrying for a while it’s obviously going to make you a little tired. Maybe he can learn from that in the future and have a uniform that is not as heavy.

What has been your experience been with Fury?

I have been in camp and watched him spar numerous times. He’s one of a kind, not only with his height and his boxing ability and him as a character. He’s just one of a kind and he brings a lot of excitement to the division.

Are some forgetting your experience fighting the top fighters like Joshua, Ruiz and Whyte?

I have gotten some good experiences under my belt. I have had 28 fights now, 26 wins, 20 by knockout so I have had some good fights around the world. Even though I lost those fights to Joshua and Dillian Whyte, it was a close fight. Joshua was on points and Dillian Whyte could have gone either way. There was a lot that happened in the fight, so I still got a lot to give the heavyweight division in boxing.

Who’s the best heavyweight in Boxing today?

After myself. Tyson Fury. To be honest, he will go down as one of the best in our era. He’s a one of a kind fighter. Joshua and all the others are great fighters, but the number one that stands out to me and to everyone else is Fury. But Joshua is a great fighter as well, Dillian Whyte, Ruiz, all of them are great fighters, but I think Fury is just a step above.

What do you know about Shawndell Terell Winters, your opponent Saturday night?

Out of the 15 fights he has had, 12 by stoppage, a little bit of pop in his hands. I know he has a lot of confidence, he wouldn’t have taken this fight, if he didn’t think he would win. So, he is going to come with a lot of confidence, I’m looking forward to the challenge on what he is going to bring.

When do you hope to be fighting for a title again?

If everything goes well Saturday, I want to fight, I want to keep busy. I want to fight 3 times this year. At the end of the year, hopefully for a title, if not, next year for a title.

What big name out there would you like to fight next?

Anyone in the top 5, I don’t care who it is, give me anyone. I’m ready.
