Kevin Barry has rubbed a bit of salt into the long and heated buildup to Joseph parker's WBO world heavyweight title defence against Hughie Fury.

Kevin Barry has opened an old wound, claiming Hughie Fury was never ready to fight in New Zealand and had regularly ducked Joseph Parker.

Fury, the mandatory challenger to Parker's WBO world heavyweight belt, controversially pulled out of a May title fight in Auckland at late notice, citing a back injury.

Fury got medical backing to retain his No 1 contender position and now conveniently fights Parker for the world title in his own backyard of Manchester on September 23.

Barry has upped the war of words heading into the highly anticipated clash, echoing the angry reaction from Parker's backers Duco Events earlier in the year as the English boxer scuttled their Auckland promotion.

"He wasn't ready. It was a calculated move on the part of his team," Barry told a boxing voice when asked why Fury failed to front in Auckland.

"He wasn't ready to come down to New Zealand and fight Joseph Parker in his backyard.

"The way it worked out, he is now fighting in his home town. Sometimes you have got to be careful what you wish for.

"We know that he was never going to come to New Zealand, but I can promise you this ... we are going to be in Manchester."

As to where Fury stood in terms of toughness for Parker, Barry couldn't resist a dig at the lanky 22-year-old Brit who, like the Kiwi, is unbeaten.

"Time will tell. Hughie is a good guy, a good fighter, he's a young guy who is developing. But we have fought some real guys, we have fought opponents that other people don't want to fight."

Barry then revealed that Fury had long been on their radar.

"We have been trying to fight Hughie Fury for a long time. We put the offer out there in Joe's second year as a pro, his third year as a pro. Every time we'd say, 'Hey Hughie, we're ready' the response was always 'No, I'm not ready for that fight'," Barry told thaboxingvoice.

"So this is a guy that we have looked at for a long time. We know his strengths, we know his weaknesses.

"But he has never felt the power that he is going to feel in this fight He has never seen the speed of Joseph Parker, he has never seen the physical work of a fighter like Joseph Parker. This is really his (Fury's) biggest test ever."

Despite the unwanted delays to this compulsory title defence, Barry sees a real silver lining to having to fight Fury on the other side of the world.

Asked if Parker was going to have to go to Manchester to make the fight happen, Barry replied: "Yeah, it probably was. But the flip side of that is we have been trying to get to the UK for the last 18 months.

"It was always our plan to campaign in the UK, there are a lot of very good fights there for us and this is the beginning. This is really going to put Joseph Parker on the boxing scene in the UK. After we take care of Fury there are other guys we are coming after.

"We are coming after Tony Bellew. We are going to be fighting Anthony Joshua. That fight is going to happen ... Joseph Parker is going to be standing in front of him one day in the ring."

David Higgins and Peter Fury make peace as Parker fight night looms video

Peter Fury and David Higgins have made their peace with the British boxing trainer saying there was nothing personal in their ugly spat.

Higgins, the promoter of WBO world heavyweight champion Joseph Parker, was thrown out of the opening press conference of fight week when he angrily confronted Fury over the lack of a neutral referee for Sunday's fight in Manchester (NZT).

Fury, the father and trainer of Parker's opponent Hughie Fury, fired off an expletive-riddled volley of abuse at Higgins as the Kiwi was escorted out of the plush London hotel by security guards.

But with the referee situation now resolved via a compromise – Terry O'Connor has been replaced by Marcus McDonnell – it seems there is no hard feelings from Fury.

He made that clear as Parker's ensemble arrived into his home city of Manchester on Thursday (NZT).

"I spoke to David Higgins, it's all resolved so let's get on with it," Fury said.

"It's not personal, things fire up, there's a lot at stake ... but I've got nothing personal with David Higgins, it's all tongue in cheek stuff."

Fury suggested there would only be one winner if the argument had got physical.

"Me and David are good, me and David are pals and it wouldn't be a fair fight if there was one, he'd be giving away about seven stone," Fury smiled.

Fury said he understood where Higgins was coming from with his beef about the officials, but he defended his side of the bargain.

"The referee situation, that has all been dealt with. The only dispute was that I have no say with any of the officials, it's out of our hands. That was frustrating," Fury said.

"I like David, I like David as a person, I think he's fair. He's only acting in Joe's best interests anyway. He wants the best for his fighter and I can understand that. He's coming over here, the first time his fighter has come away, it's a big ordeal for him. He just wanted it to be fair and I get it, I do get it.

"So I understand. There's not a problem, we have spoke since and we are good mates."

Fury said it was all part of boxing, though times have changed.

"In our day if there's a problem, you get a punch in the face, you punch the guy back and then you go to the pub and you're the best of mates later."

Fury suggested that would be the way between his son and Parker once the dust had settled from their fight.

"There won't be any animosity between the two of them afterwards," Fury said, as he talked up the character of Parker and his family values.

"To be fair, I've always respected Joseph Parker, all of our team like him. We like what we see in Joseph Parker, he fights anybody and that's what we respect. We are fighting people after all, it's a business, but we respect that.

"I met his mother and father. That family thing that they have got, it's a beautiful thing. He's a god-faring young man and that's through his mother and father. They should be very proud of the man they have raised.

"And it's the same with my son. We are a very tight family. You do the best you can for you family."

Boxing: Joseph Parker v Hughie Fury - What you need to know
21 Sep, 2017 10:01am 3 minutes to read

NZ Herald
By: Patrick McKendry in Manchester
All you need to know from the big fight between Joseph Parker and Hughie Fury on Sunday.

What: WBO world heavyweight title fight.

Who: Joseph Parker (NZ) v Hughie Fury (Eng)

Where: Manchester Arena.

When: From 8am on Sunday NZT.

Why: Good question... Hughie Fury is the mandatory challenger after David Haye elected to fight Tony Bellew instead. He thought it would be an easier and more lucrative fight (fellow Englishman Bellew is really a cruiserweight), but instead Haye ruptured his Achilles and fought the later part of the bout effectively on one leg until the fight was mercifully stopped. Fury, far lesser known than former world champion Tyson, a cousin, was the next cab off the rank. He was originally scheduled to fight Parker in Auckland in May but pulled out with a back injury.

How: Parker v Fury is being shown on YouTube (pay per view) in the United Kingdom and Ireland (it's on Sky Arena in NZ), and the YouTube experiment is most likely the way such fights will go in future. It's a bit of a risk at this stage, though.

Who will win: Parker will be favourite - he has fought by far the better opponents and has a far better knockout record, with 18 Kos in 23 professional fights. Fury has won 10 of his 20 professional fights by knockout.

A win here will set the Kiwi up for bigger fights in the UK, or possibly the United States, where WBC champion Deontay Wilder awaits. In Britain, Anthony Joshua is by far the biggest heavyweight star.

Why should I care: Parker is under pressure to put in a statement performance and announce himself here in England after two lacklustre peformances, which have, admittedly, resulted in victories. Who knows how good Fury really is? He last fought in April last year and by all accounts was lucky the fight was stopped due to a head cut when he was ahead on points.

What are Parker's big rivals doing: Joshua is preparing for the defence of his IBF and WBA titles against Kubrat Pulev in Cardiff on October 28. After Joshua's big win over Wladimir Klitschko in April, it would be a surprise to see Pulev prevail here. WBC champion Wilder will fight Luis "King Kong" Ortiz in Brooklyn on November 4. That has the makings of an interesting bout. Ortiz, a Cuban, is a monster southpaw.

Joseph Parker: Time for talking over

Joseph Parker is tired of talking and is itching for action.

In a week of so many words, the WBO heavyweight Joseph Parker spoke the most sense when he fronted the final press conference for his title defence against Britain's Hughie Fury in Manchester on Sunday (NZT).

Looking sharp in a suit and tie as he sat in front of a large gathering of international media in a plush function room at the famous Old Trafford football ground, Parker kept it short and to the point, just like he wants his fight to be.

"What can I say, all the talk's been done. It's time to get in the ring and do my thing," the 25-year-old said when asked for his final thoughts on the fight.

"I feel ready, prepared ... I feel powerful.

"He wants to knock me out, I want to knock him out.

"The training camp is where all the hard work is done, the fight is the reward and I'm looking to getting my reward."

Both fighters claimed victory at the traditional stare down, Parker believing Fury looked scared and "took a big gulp".

Again it was just talk, though Parker did look the more relaxed in these surroundings which he's more used to, even if Fury was at the home of his beloved Manchester United.

Parker has genuinely impressed the British media and all those who have been around him over the past fortnight.

As always, he's been friendly and engaging. No one has had cause to say or write a bad word about him.

He's won them over out of the ring and now he wants to do the same inside the ropes.

It's fair to say Parker has more than a few doubters in the UK and he knows he can't convince them with his smile, but he can turn heads with his gloves.

Beating a Fury any way he can will increase his recognition in this hotbed of boxing.

Knocking out a Fury will give him the potential to earn a fortune.

Watching on was the other Fury, Hughie's larger-than-life cousin Tyson, the former world champion.

The giant smiled and shook hands but didn't want to do interviews. Usually the life and soul of these often strained affairs, he didn't want to steal this show and overshadow younger Hughie's big moment.

The only words he uttered were an acknowledgement of Parker as the Kiwi sat down ready to start proceedings.

"Looking smart Joe, looking smart mate," Tyson said, noting Parker's classy apparel.

Otherwise he was content to sit back and look and listen. He appreciated it when Parker's trainer Kevin Barry took a moment to acknowledged his presence and thank him for opening up the division.

"We've made it no secret that we would never have had this opportunity to become WBO world champion if it wasn't for him knocking off Klitschko, so we appreciate you coming today," Barry said to warm applause.

There's nothing like saluting the King in his own kingdom. Sidelined Tyson mightn't rule the world any longer, but he still presides over Manchester.

Now Prince Hughie wants to bring one of his cousin's old crowns back to the family castle.

"I'm going to put the performance of my life on," Hughie vowed, saying it was an honour to front the first sporting event at the Manchester Arena since May's terrorist attack there.

"It's my home town where I've been born and bred and my heart goes out to all the families. There's no words that can be said ... but I'm going to bring that belt back to Manchester.

"I'm so hungry and ready to put on a performance and believe me, when I say I'm going to knock him out, I'm going to knock him out."

Tough talk for what promises to be a tough fight. Now it's time to see who has the final say.
