Can Adam Kownacki Regain What He Once Had?
April 8, 2021

This year will not just see the return of Andy Ruiz, Chris Arreola, and (maybe) Deontay Wilder. Adam Kownacki, last seen being upset by Finn veteran Robert Helenius, this over a year ago, Kownacki at the time positioning himself handsomely in terms of getting a shot at one of the big guys (Wilder, then WBC heavyweight champ, being one of them) is another big-name heavyweight on the comeback trail. Some 13 months on from the Helenius disaster, Kownacki is plotting his return.

Speaking with SBNation, the 32-year-old Polish warrior with the 20-1(15) record says his priority is a revenge win over Helenius, but that after that, he will pretty much be accommodating to the idea of getting in there with anyone.

One fight that interests “Baby Face” is a rumble with the man who is seemingly calling out just about everyone right now, Dillian Whyte. Kownacki told SBNation that a fight between he and the British banger “could go down in history, like a Gatti-Ward sort of slugfest.”

The three 140 pound wars Gatti and Ward thrilled the world with will stand alone, yet there is no resisting the temptation to believe a Whyte-Kownacki fight would prove to be something special. Both men, as Kownacki says, “throw bombs.”

“Dillian Whyte is a good dude, man,” Kownacki told Lewis Watson. “That fight would be a brawl. I trained with Whyte in one of Wladimir Klitschko’s camps, so I know him well. We are both ambitious guys, so it’ll come down to who deserves it the most. Dillian throws bombs and comes to fight. He’s trying to take you out with every shot. This could go down in history, like a Gatti-Ward sort of slugfest. We both want title shots, so if we have to fight each other, then so be it.”

There are a number of intriguing heavyweight match-ups that can be made this year, all of them seemingly guaranteed explosions. Be it Whyte-Wilder, Whyte-Kownacki, or Helenius-Kownacki II. Sign me up for either one! We’re all awaiting the big one, between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, but it could be that the warriors a few rungs below the top two wind up thrilling us all with the best heavyweight action fights this year.

Benn stops Vargas in one round

Unbeaten WBA #11, IBF #14 welterweight Conor Benn (18-0, 12 KOs) needed just 80 seconds to defend his WBA Continental title against Samuel Vargas (31-7-2, 14 KOs) on Saturday night at the Copper Box Arena in London. Benn, the son of former world champion Nigel Benn, jumped on Vargas early on and referee Michael Alexander quickly waved it off. Vargas complained about the stoppage.

WBO middleweight champion Savannah “The Silent Assasin” Marshall (10-0, 8 KOs) scored a third round KO over late sub Maria Lindberg (19-7-2, 10 KOs). Marshall dropped Lindberg in round two, then put her down for the count in round three. Time was 1:11.

“The Baby Face Assassin” Shannon Courtenay (7-1, 3 KOs) won by ten round unanimous decision over the previously unbeaten “Blonde Bomber” Ebanie Bridges (5-1, 2 KOs) in a clash for the vacant WBA women’s bantamweight world title. Bridges’ left eye was closed for the last few rounds. Judges favored the home fighter 97-94, 98-92, 98-92. The bout seemed much closer than that.

Bantamweight Kash Farooq (15-1, 6 KOs) outpointed Alexander Espinoza (20-3-2, 8 KOs) over ten for the WBC international silver title. Scores were 97-93, 97-95, 97-94.

Heavyweight Nick Campbell won his professional debut by TKO2 over Petr Frohlich (2-31-1, 1 KO).

Interview: Trainer Graham Shaw

By Ray Wheatley – World of Boxing

Graham Shaw who trains Australian boxing’s biggest pay-per-view attraction Paul Gallen (10-0-1, 5 KOs) talks to Fightnews.com® about Gallen’s will clash with former WBA heavyweight champion Lucas “ Big Daddy” Browne (29-2, 25 KOs) on April 21 at Wollongong Entertainment Centre, Wollongong, NSW televised on FoxtelMain Event Pay-Per-View.

“We have been training for Lucas Browne since the fight was announced which is about ten weeks ago,” said Shaw, who previously trained former WBA, IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale and former IBF light welterweight champion Lovemore Ndou.

“Paul Gallen didn’t have much of a break since the Mark Hunt fight. He had about three weeks break after the win over Hunt. Paul Gallen is a dedicated trainer and he is as good as anybody I have had.

“I was in Gallen’s corner for his first fight and after he asked if I would train him. He has been sparring the best heavyweights including Willis Meehan, the son of former world heavyweight contender Kali Meehan. Sparring with Willis was very good. It showed Gallen can compete with the best. He sparred with Bowie Tupou last week and was impressive. Paul boxed the African heavyweight Fosso from Canberra also. I have tried to get him the best sparring and I believe I have done that.

“I have watched Browne’s recent fights and he has done nothing. Gallen is boxing much better. Browne is not a technical boxer. His hands are down and feet all over the place. Head sticking up in the air. He hasn’t got a trainer and nobody is telling him to tighten himself up.

“We used Alex Simon in sparring who competes in the world’s strongest man competition and has a fight coming up in Dubai. He tore a bicep sparring Paul. Dave Millward is training him. Alex can throw punches. He weighs 168 kg and 6’2”. He loads up but made Paul keep his hands up. He has done MMA and kickboxing.

“Gallen is boxing real good. The idea is not to get hit but they are heavyweights. They can swing their arm at you and knock you over. Paul has got to box careful and stay tight and clean which he has been doing in training. Gallen has real good head movement and he won’t stand in front of Browne and let him tee off. Gallen will keep the pressure on Browne.

“Paul’s last opponent Mark Hunt (former UFC and MMA champion) would have similar power to Browne and he tagged Paul when they fought but he stayed upright. Hunt showboated and gave Paul time to recover. Paul Gallen is tough, there are no two ways about it. He is the toughest fighter I have had along with Lovemore Ndou. You had to kill Lovemore to stop him. Gallen is the same. When he gets hurt – he grits his teeth and carries on. I am not sure if Browne has that.

“Paul Gallen respects the sport of boxing. When he goes into a gym and they say Paul Gallen is here – he keeps to himself but if someone wants a photo he will always give them a photo. He is not up himself. Everyone who meets him likes him. He is a good person.

“You will see a different Paul Gallen against Browne. Brian Willmont (Australian boxing’s leading cutman) watched Gallen in sparring recently and he said he has never seen him box better. Paul boxed sensational.

“This last four weeks it has really come together for him and against the high-level heavyweight sparring. He knows he cannot take silly risks against them.

“Gallen has a heavy schedule with television and radio commitments but we work around them so his training doesn’t suffer. I am a full-time boxing trainer so I can do that. He trained today at 8:30am and Paul has a media day at Bondi. Paul has never said to me I cannot make it today. We plan his training around his work commitments and it has worked. He runs daily on the road and also in the sand dunes of Cronulla. He does that before he comes to the gym. Gallen is a machine.”

Call me blind, but I don't see Whyte ranked anywhere in the top 15 in any alphabet:

The WBO rankings gave me a good giggle, they should be WHO instead of WBO. Created by people who know nothing about boxing.

They look fantastic compared to the WBA. Tbh, they're all as bad as each other.

Yup if you're a Haymon/Don King fighter then you'll go down the WBC/WBA route, Warren and Arum virtually run the WBO etc.

Got your post gothe.  Remember, I'm the moderator and I do see the deletes in purple.  It's all good.  Wish it hadn't been deleted though.  Nothing wrong with it.  Sounds like fight news doesn't stay current.  Here's your link.
