RE: Heavyweight Division - diehard - 09-19-2015 Meehan is for the money. Duco can't get too many credible guys other than journeymen over here. So they either have to create a rivalry between OZ and NZ or get a guy with a padded record in Germany or Brazil. Parker already has the ranking, at #6 in one alphabet, and #10 or so in another. So until he fights a top ten guy, Meehan is credible, especially given his size. Parker is fighting every three months or so. Tupou was credible, and JP developed a new punch for him, the Skip Punch. For Meehan, it may be a whole new punch altogether. Something never seen before. I think Duco and KB are matching him perfectly. Now they just need to wait for an opportunity for Baby Joseph to face a top ten guy. RE: Heavyweight Division - Jamieson - 09-19-2015 Why does Parker have to wait? Is he going to be the next Browne waiting to be cashed out? He should be starting to target some other prospects/ fringe contenders like these guys (Joshua, Whyte, Washington, Breazeale, Teper etc) are. Go back to the States and start making some noise. Tupou wasn't credible, and Meehan ain't either. If your getting beat up by Travis Walker then your days as a threat are over. RE: Heavyweight Division - shamrock - 09-19-2015 True that, I wondered about that too, especially with Meehan unrecognized now and 45yrs of age.. RE: Heavyweight Division - diehard - 09-19-2015 Meehan and Tupou (who we all thought was credible before the fight) were a step up from Parker's other opponents. I just think he needs to continue to step up. No one is criticising AJ for fighting Cornish or Whyte. Both need to fight a top ten guy. Jamieson, not sure what your issue is with fight news rankings. It's a composite of all the alphabets. Sure, there's a few that I would move around, but the key fighters are there. I'm talking heavyweights. http://www.fightnews.com/rankings-2 RE: Heavyweight Division - Jamieson - 09-19-2015 (09-19-2015, 02:45 PM)diehard Wrote: Meehan and Tupou (who we all thought was credible before the fight) were a step up from Parker's other opponents. Did anyone think he'd make it past halfway? The only reason I thought the fight made sense was to build a bit of a following/ rivalry with the trans-tasman clash, such as the Meehan fight does. On the world scene it's not relevant. Cornish was 21-0 although unproven, Whyte is 16-0 and holds an amateur victory over Joshua. Parker has yet to face an unbeaten opponent. Their rankings are terrible. I answered in another thread. Cunningham, Teper not in the top 16? Joshua at 7? Ruiz 8? RE: Heavyweight Division - gothenaki - 09-19-2015 Jamieson - most, if not all rankings can be debated, because as Die says, most of them don't fight each other. Cornish's "0" was a joke. You can keep the zero (like Rohit Singh) if you pick your fights. Surely you wouldn't pick Cornish to beat Meehan? I agree Ruiz has done little, but he's got the zero, so hard to rate What I don't get, is even if Parker wants to retire at 30, what's the rush? There's going to be a lot of scrapping for position depending on what Wlad does. Take it easy, pick your fights and get a bit older, wiser and more experienced I say. I'd be nervous if he went in with spaw TT (who's nearly as old as Meehan), so I think he needs experience against big euros and spaws before he tries for a shot. Even if he spent the next 3 yrs honing his craft, he'd be the same age as AJ is now RE: Heavyweight Division - Jamieson - 09-19-2015 (09-19-2015, 04:43 PM)gothenaki Wrote: Jamieson - most, if not all rankings can be debated, because as Die says, most of them don't fight each other. I agree Ruiz has done little, but he's got the zero, so hard to rate Of course rankings can be debated but it should be based on what you've done not what you could do. Why is Ruiz hard to rate? He was lucky to get the nod over a washed up totally shot Liakovich. That tells me enough. Cornish may not beat Meehan but I'd pick Whyte to destroy him. I prefer fighters to pick out the best challenges and fights that are going to help with your development. A loss is not the end of the world and can often times improve a fighter. In heavyweight boxing especially; everything can change on one punch. Parker's advancement could stagnate and plateau if he feasts too long on journeyman. I'm not saying he needs to be fighting top contenders but he should be targeting some of these second tier guys. RE: Heavyweight Division - shamrock - 09-19-2015 Good debate. Status quo might also see Parkers fan base diminished. RE: Heavyweight Division - diehard - 09-19-2015 Jamieson, he IS targeting those top fighters, even in the top 10. That is, if you believe and trust Lonergan. Right Sham? Parker's fan base will continue as long as the fights are relevant, like with Meehan coming up. If he goes back to guys from other countries with padded records, it WILL diminish. So year, status quo won't cut it. Like a shark, JP has to keep moving forward. Promoters/Managers don't want their top ten guys to fight tough fights unless it's a mandatory to a title, or it's a money fight. Consequently top ten guys don't fight each other much, which leads to guys like AJ, Ruiz, Parker, etc getting ranked in the top ten even facing a top ten guy, never mind beating a top ten guy. BTW, the Meehan that beat Cameron KO's Whyte. Too porous a defence. But I like Whyte's chin and his power. Minto connected a lot, but had no power, and it didn't faze him. RE: Heavyweight Division - shamrock - 09-19-2015 Sorry Die, I hate conjecture in hypothetical fights. I never saw Whyte fight but saying Meehan beats him doesn't make is real. Parker was in with an injured Minto in longer time. Meehan is a good fight for Parker in terms of experience, but that's all it does for him. |
