Heavyweight division comes to life

Most of the top heavyweights in boxing will see action over the next few weeks. It all starts on Saturday when IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (16-0, 16 KOs) defends against Dominic Breazeale (17-0, 15 KOs) at the O2 Arena in London. Joshua is currently a 40:1 favorite at 5dimes.
On July 9th comes the grudge rematch between WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (25-0, 18 KOs) against former longtime champ Wladimir Klitschko (64-4, 53 KOs) at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England. Wlad is a slight favorite in that one.
On July 16th is the return of WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs), who takes on Chris Arreola (36-4-1, 31 KOs) in a voluntary defense at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama. Wilder is currently a 35:1 favorite.
Then on July 23, unbeaten #1 rated IBF and WBO heavyweight Joseph Parker (19-0, 16 KOs) returns against WBA #11 Solomon Haumono (24-2-2, 21 KOs) at the Horncastle Arena in Christchurch, New Zealand. Parker is a whopping 125:1 to win that one.

Among other notables in the division, WBC #1 rated Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs) is currently on hold while the WBC investigates a positive drug test.
WBA regular heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev (34-3-1, 21 KOs), recently reinstated as champion by the WBA, is expected to face Fres Oquendo (37-8, 24 KOs) later this year in the WBA heavyweight tournament.
WBA interim heavyweight champion Luis Ortiz (25-0, 22 KOs) is expected to return in September against Alexander Ustinov in the WBA heavyweight tournament.
Former WBA regular heavyweight champion Lucas Browne (24-0, 21 KOs) is currently on suspension until September after being stripped due to a positive drug test after stopping the aforementioned Chagaev in March.
IBF #2 heavyweight Kubrat Pulev (23-1, 12 KOs) currently has nothing scheduled after beating Derek Chisora last month.
Former heavyweight champions David Haye (28-2, 26 KOs) and Shannon Briggs (60-6-1, 53 KOs) are planning a September showdown in London.

With the short notice, and 6 months after he last tried, Arreola is going to be well overweight/unfit. And if he manages to land something of note and win, he will be striped because he was smoking a joint while taking the drug test. Has never really given himself a chance.
Hopefully Ustinov will get his shot this time. That guy has been screwed around so much of late.

Sky Sports asked one of these very fighters, David Price, to list his top-5 and he gave, expectedly, an honest appraisal of his countrymen. Price, who returned to winning ways on May 29, and hopes for a shot at Joshua this year, listed the following as his current top-5 Brits:
1: Tyson Fury
“I’m not exactly his biggest fan but I am definitely warming to him,” Price said of Fury. “We had our differences in the past and I would love to reignite that rivalry. He is the heavyweight champion of the world and he did everything he said he was going to do. People should remember just what he did: he beat Wladimir Klitschko.”
2: David Haye
“You can only beat what is put in front of you, but unfortunately Haye has been putting them in front of himself,” Price said of “The Hayemaker.” “You cannot deny Haye has been to the top, but the one thing people want now is value for money. He will step it up. His punch power and accuracy are second to none, it’s just the speed that worries me.”
3: Anthony Joshua
“He is only young and 16-0 but there is already a problem: where does A.J go next?” Price said of the man he wants to fight this year. “It is going to need some great match-making because is he ready to take on the very best in the world? He is a work in progress and even he admits that. It all depends on timing and I would probably need a couple more fights, but Joshua will still be the IBF champion so I would love to fight him for that.”

4: David Price
“I have heard of this bloke, he’s a bit of a dark horse,” Price said of himself. “People are saying he’s rubbish but I have a feeling they are getting it all wrong. In all seriousness, I am finally injury-free. I had an elbow problem for years. I wouldn’t put myself on a pedestal just because I lost to two drug cheats bit I am back, I have a new trainer in Dave Coldwell, and it would be nice if something went my way.”
5: Dereck Chisora
“Dereck is a good fighter,” Price said. “His last fight was against Kubrat Pulev and Pulev is in the world’s top five for me and I have done a lot of work with him. Dereck went over and gave it everything, but I still believe he’s got plenty left to offer. I am not saying I am too good to fight Dereck, but after those two defeats, it would be nice – if something went my way for once – to be put back where I was. That would mean I probably wouldn’t fight Dereck. But he is still very good and very tough.”
Price’s picks are decent enough, even if I would probably put Dillian Whyte in there at number-five, instead of Chisora. And some fans may raise eyebrows at the way Price ranks himself as the fourth-best heavyweight in Britain. Still, the UK has some talented and exciting big men, and Price understandably wants to get back in the mix with them. I disagree with Price though – a fight between he and Chisora looks a natural.

Anthony Joshua has a lot of weaknesses, says title opponent Dominic Breazeale
Anthony Joshua defends his IBF world heavyweight title on Saturday.
British boxer Anthony Joshua's weaknesses will be exposed when he defends his IBF world heavyweight title, his opponent Dominic Breazeale has said as the American returns to London for the first time since his 2012 Olympics nightmare.
Olympic champion Joshua, who won the world heavyweight crown in only his 16th professional fight, will put up his first defence of the title against Breazeale on Saturday.
"Joshua has a lot of weaknesses. Joshua doesn't have much of a jaw, I understand that he is really robotic," the 30-year-old told British media.
"He has a little speed, a little power, it's the heavyweight game that is what we do.
Joseph Parker is the number one mandatory challenger for Anthony Joshua's title.
"He's [Joshua] very raw for having 16 fights. I have definitely had tougher fights than Joshua."
With a record of 17-0, Breazeale is undefeated as a professional and appeared at the 2012 London Olympics, where he lost in the first round.
"Everything from coaching to arrival in London didn't have a lot of education put into it," he added. "You had no idea who was in the competition, no idea who you were fighting."
Kiwi heavyweight Joseph Parker will eventually square off with Joshua, having been elevated to the IBF's mandatory challenger position with a win over Carlos Takam in his last bout.
