RE: Parker vs Ruiz for WBO - diehard - 10-31-2016

Joe fights 5 times a year, and if he fights for another 6 years, that's 30 more fights, for a total of 50 fights in his career. Not bad.

RE: Parker vs Ruiz for WBO - Infern0 - 10-31-2016

He won't fight 5 times a year as a champion

RE: Parker vs Ruiz for WBO - diehard - 10-31-2016

Nah, even if he isn't champ, he'll slow down as the comp gets tougher. Not to mention injuries. But I was basing it on year to date as a guide. Plus, I don't think he'll retire at 30. I thought he said 32 in one article.

RE: Parker vs Ruiz for WBO - Infern0 - 10-31-2016

Yeah it reminds me of David "I will not fight past my 30th year) haye

He said that for years

RE: Parker vs Ruiz for WBO - diehard - 10-31-2016

And Tua said he'd retire around 30 or so. Hopkins said he's retire at 40 out of respect for his mum. He's what, 50 now and still fighting? Wonder what his mum thinks?

Auckland still on Joseph Parker's radar as WBO heavyweight title fight preparations ramp up

Trainer Kevin Barry and New Zealand heavyweight Joseph Parker continue working towards a December 10 clash with Mexico's Andy Ruiz for the vacant WBO title.

A focused Joseph Parker continues to work on the presumption his fight for the WBO heavyweight title will be held in New Zealand.

Parker's promoters Duco Events are expected to announce their plans for the fight on Thursday.

They won the rights to stage the fight in Auckland on December 10 but have been battling to find the funds to hold it at such notice.

If they can't manage that, the fight rights will be handed to Ruiz's veteran promoter Bob Arum to hold the bout in the United States, probably early next year.

But Parker keeps putting the original date out there.

"Excited for #DEC10, are YOU?" Parker wrote in his latest postings on Facebook and Twitter which were placed late on Tuesday night.

And in a just-released interview with Coconet.tv, the Kiwi-born Samoan and his trainer Kevin Barry referenced December 10 and the New Zealand connotations.

"I said at the end of last year in an interview, 'Give me a year and I'll be champion of the world' and it looks like it's heading that way. If you believe in yourself, you have the right guidance and right people around you ... but the buzzy thing about it is it's going to be in New Zealand ... should be in New Zealand ... and we are going to make history," Parker told Coconet.tv.

"Winning that title in New Zealand would be a dream come true."

Parker was speaking at his current training camp in Las Vegas and was in a confident mood.

"I've worked hard, I've put in the work training. Being away from home, putting in the work every single day, three times a day. And it's not all me, it's a team effort, I have a great team," he said.

"I have got a whole new focus and everything is flowing nicely. Mentally I'm in the right place, I'm getting a lot of help with things I need help with, I feel good."

Enjoying physical advantages over unbeaten Ruiz, Parker is out to make the most of those to counter the Mexican's aggressive approach

"He's short, I'm going to punch him from the outside and jab his head. I'm going to use my height and my reach and not let him come in," Parker said.

"I have full trust in my training and full trust in what Kevin is teaching me. Put anyone in front of me when I'm at my best and I'll beat anyone."

Parker also dismissed his sparring struggles with Ruiz when he tangled with him in Las Vegas in 2013, just as he came under Barry's tutelage.

"It's 2016 now, I'm a more complete fighter. I have all these different skills, I know what I'm doing in the ring, I'm comfortable."

Joseph Parker and the fight to save his Auckland title bout

Will trainer Kevin Barry and New Zealand heavyweight Joseph Parker still be smiling when the venue for the WBO title ...

There might be a million reasons – or dollars – for Joseph Parker's handlers to give up their New Zealand rights to the WBO heavyweight title fight, but there are equally compelling arguments to suggest they will keep it here.

It's an equation Duco Events co-owners David Higgins and Dean Lonergan have juggled over the past week as they prepare to announce their decision on whether they will go ahead with hosting their man Parker against dangerous Mexican Andy Ruiz in Auckland on December 10.

With enough time having passed to ease the polarising issue of government funding and for the public to digest the "80 per cent" chance of the fight being taken offshore, this is an opportunity for Duco to regain some public faith.

Cue Higgins and Lonergan riding in on their white horses to save the day and allow New Zealand sports fans to lap up a historic occasion.

But forget the romance surrounding this momentous opportunity for a moment, there are some harsh economics involved as well.

And the reality is that Parker is Duco's golden egg. They've invested considerably in him and now is the time to start making some serious returns.

Those returns start by contesting this world title. Win that and big money comes in the form of defences against the likes of David Haye, while even bigger fortunes lie in the shape of unification bouts with champs Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder.

So the egg needs to be allowed to hatch in comfort.

That's why it's unimaginable to think they will hand over home advantage to Ruiz and his Hispanic army, having fought so hard to get these hosting rights in the first place.

And for a company known for innovative thinking and achieving, it's equally hard to consider Duco would have taken on this assignment without doing their financial homework.

Have they simply played a clever promotional game, keeping their fighter and event in the spotlight as the clock ticks closer to the opening bell?

Quite possible. But there are plenty of other pointers to why an Auckland fight on December 10 makes sense:

- Parker's busy social media accounts keep hammering the December 10 date as opposed to the January time slot Ruiz's promoter Bob Arum prefers if he gets control of the event.

- Ruiz has long battled weight and attitude issues. He's in the midst of a torturous altitude camp under the guidance of world class trainer Abel Sanchez. Why give Ruiz any more time to get his body and mind into shape? Hit him hard and hit him now.

- Similarly, Sanchez is under enormous pressure. On December 3 he is in Murat Gassiev's corner in Moscow, trying to win the WBA and IBF cruiserweight belts off fellow Russian Denis Lebedev. It's a long way from Moscow to Auckland – keep the pressure on Sanchez as much as Ruiz by forcing the fight now.

- The events schedule at Vector Arena, the preferred fight location, remains curiously free on December 10 in a busy lead-in to the holiday season.

- New Zealand's leading fight doctor Dave Renata is understood to be penciled in for the December 10 date.

- It was only a few weeks ago that Duco were heralding a major deal with a specialist TV broadcast distributor in the United States that paved the way to conquer not only that tricky market but also reach every continent in the world, with a potential 100 countries and more than 500m households. That sounds like serious economics and nothing has happened to change that.

- It's believed in the wake of the decision to withdraw their application for government support, Duco met with Sky TV to see if any shortfall could be recouped in a pay-per-view extravaganza that is sure to rake in big money.

- There have already been public plottings of a potential undercard with Parker's impressive stable mate Izu Ugonoh calling out Hughie Fury, the respected heavyweight nephew of troubled world champ Tyson Fury. There's a ton of irony there with Tyson vacating the WBO belt to make this title fight happen and Hughie having been controversially rebuffed by Ruiz for a scheduled fight last month.

So, seems like Parker fight is in Auckland. Safe money is on a Parker decision - Ruiz Jr appears to at least have a decent chin, even if his opposition have been below par.

FROM BOXING 24 - Confirmation of AUCKLAND DEC 10.

Joseph Parker vs. Andy Ruiz Jr. December 10 fight
date November 2nd, 2016 -

By Eric Baldwin: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum plans on holding a press conference this Saturday in Las Vegas on November 5 to announce the Joseph Parker (21-0, 18 KOs) vs. Andy Ruiz Jr. (29-0, 19 KOs) heavyweight clash for the vacant WBO belt on December 10 in New Zealand. The Ruiz Jr. vs. Parker fight will be for the WBO title that Tyson Fury recently vacated.

It should be a good fight. Parker, 24, recently defeated Carlos Takam in a World Boxing Organization title eliminator last May to put himself in position for a title shot. Parker was hoping to get a crack at Tyson Fury, but he chose to vacate his title instead of facing him or Wladimir Klitschko.

Since beating Takam, Parker has stopped Solomon Haumono and Alexander Dimitrenko in consecutive fights. The win over Dimitrenko came last month on October 1 in New Zealand.

“Arum says Joe Parker and Andy Ruiz will hold a presser Saturday in Vegas to announce Dec. 10 fight in New Zealand. #boxing ,” said Dan Rafael said on his Twitter.
